Getting the Right Massage

Are you hesitant to get a massage because you are not sure the place you have found is legitimate? That is a valid concern and can be easily addressed.

You can ask over the phone if the massage establishment and each therapist is licensed, but if you want to be sure, just go there.

Most jurisdictions in northern Virginia require massage establishment permits in addition to business licenses. This permit is particular to businesses offering massage services and must be posted in a place visible to clients.

Additionally, each therapist's permit must be visible. All that is not to say you could never get a good massage from an unlicensed practitioner or you will definitely get a good massage from a licensed therapist, but it is the place to start and a sign that the establishment you are visiting is following the law.

The second item to look for is a health background intake form. Some medical conditions and some medications preclude clients from getting massage and the only way to know that is to have clients fill out a health background intake form. These forms should be kept in a locking filing cabinet similar to what you see in a doctor's office.

So now you are sure that you are in a reputable massage establishment and are wondering if there are any other clues to the quality of the massage offered. A couple of things to note.

Is the massage room set up as a massage room, or is it used as something else primarily and used as massage only when needed? Are there at least two three feet around the table on each side so the therapist can use proper body mechanics to perform the massage?

Is the table made with sheets or towels? If the table is at an awkward angle, does that allow enough room around the table? Just because it is at an awkward angle does not mean the room is too small, though it may be an indication.

Good luck with your massage.
