Chiropractic Care: History and Benefits
What Is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a type of healthcare that primarily concentrates on the joints of the spine and extremities, focusing on how they connect to the nervous system. Chiropractic physicians are primary care physicians who specialize in musculoskeletal and neurological conditions as well as physiotherapy, rehabilitation and nutrition. There are subset disciplines of Chiropractic that focus on rehabilitation, injuries, neurology, diagnostic radiology, sports, pediatrics, pregnancy, and more.
One of the primary goals of Chiropractic physicians is to utilize non-pharmacological and non-surgical techniques in the treatment of a wide variety of conditions.
In the past 125 years since its inception, Chiropractic has evolved into the robust evidence-based model of care that exists today.
Brief History Of Chiropractic
and Manipulative Therapy
Chiropractic was created by D.D. Palmer in 1895, who started the first school of Chiropractic in 1897. Today there are 40 Chiropractic colleges around the world and over 100,000 practicing Chiropractic Physicians. The term Chiropractic comes from the Greek words “cheiros” and “praktos” and means “done by hand”.
Manipulative therapy itself is much older and according to the oldest references dates back at least 2500 years, and has been used as a healing practice by numerous cultures around the world including those in China, India, Japan, Greece, Norway, Russia, Nepal, Mexico and many more. In fact, it is believed that manipulation was used by the Babylonians, Mesopotamians, Assyrians and ancient Egyptians. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, wrote about his use of spinal manipulative therapy for the treatment of scoliosis, gibbus deformities and other conditions.
How Can Chiropractic Help Me Today?
The most common reason that people seek out the help of a Chiropractic physician is back pain. In addition to back pain, Chiropractic physicians treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions including sciatica, headaches, shoulder impingement, neck pain, rotator cuff issues, tendinitis, sprains/strains and much more.
A combination of spinal and extremity manipulations, rehabilitation, nutrition and physiotherapeutic modalities such as therapeutic ultrasound, electrical stimulation, shockwave therapy, massage and more can be utilized for relief. Chiropractic physicians treat the cause of your disease instead of just the symptoms, by providing wellness and preventative care. The cost of Chiropractic care is often less than other medical interventions, such as surgery, and many insurances have coverage. The best part is getting real results without the use of drugs or surgery, and leading a life with less pain and better health.
