What Is Anti-Aging Medicine?

Anti-aging is a relatively new field in medicine, but with hundreds of thousands of baby boomers entering their 50’s and 60’s daily it is becoming increasingly more important. Today’s baby boomers expect a better quality of health than their parents and with the increased life expectancy they anticipate living another 30-40 years. In addition to this they want to look good as they age and that is why skin care, hormones, diet and exercise are all integral parts of anti-aging.

You are all about your hormones. Every process that goes on inside of you is controlled by your hormones. Hormone balancing is not just about menopause and menopause is not just about hot flashes. Hormone imbalance can begin at any age. Severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a sign of hormone imbalance and so is irregular bleeding. A lot of women, especially those with fibroids, are offered unnecessary hysterectomies because of bleeding when the problem could be solved by balancing their hormones. How do your hormones affect other people? We all know someone who seems to be a completely different person after 45. Whereas they used to be fun to be around and easy to get along with they are now easily irritated, moody, and stressed.

Men need to realize that evaluating and treating their hormone imbalances is just as important for them as it is for the women in their lives. Andropause is a time when male hormone levels decrease usually around the ages of 35-40. Testosterone levels start to decline in the late 30’s and drop steadily at approximately 1% per year whereas women lose 90% of their hormone production over a two year span it may take a man 10-12 years to completely deplete his hormone stores. The symptoms of hormone imbalance in both sexes are dizziness, sleeplessness, fatigue, decreased libido, weight gain, sweating, itching, dry eyes, hair loss, depression and mood swings. In addition, men may experience erectile dysfunction, weak muscles and breast enlargement.

Anti-aging is preventive medicine at its best. It will keep you healthy and help prevent or delay the onset of diabetes, heart disease, and the symptoms of premature aging. Hormone balancing is a very important part of anti-aging and it should be done with bio-identical hormones, which are natural and that your body is already used to.
