Gut Microbiome Tests in Australia: What to Compare Before Choosing One
Why gut microbiome testing matters
The gut microbiome, the trillions of bacteria, fungi and other microbes living in the digestive tract, plays a measurable role in digestion, immune regulation and metabolic health. The NIH Human Microbiome Project has been mapping these connections since 2007, and growing scientific and consumer interest has moved microbiome analysis from a niche research topic into a widely available wellness-testing category. More Australians are now using at-home stool tests to understand what’s going on beneath the surface, including for symptoms like persistent abdominal discomfort.
Not all tests are built the same, though. When comparing gut microbiome tests, consumers may want to consider whether the report includes:
- Microbial diversity and the types of organisms detected
- Functional information, such as the presence of microbes associated with short-chain fatty acid production
- Additional gastrointestinal markers, where offered, while recognizing that markers such as zonulin have limitations and should not be interpreted as stand-alone measures of intestinal permeability
- Pathogen testing or other pathology markers when these are performed using appropriate validated methods
- Professional interpretation that explains the results while acknowledging the current limits of microbiome testing
Commercial microbiome results should not be used by themselves to diagnose disease or determine treatment.
With that framework in mind, the following examples show some of the different gut microbiome testing approaches currently available in Australia and the features consumers may encounter when comparing options.
| Test | Method | Clinical review | Turnaround | Access |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Everlab Gut Microbiome Test | Metagenomics + ELISA + RT-PCR (3 panels) | Doctor review + dietitian interpretation (standard) | ~4 weeks | DTC, $899 members / $999 non-members |
| Microba Microbiome Explorer | Full metagenomic sequencing | Self-interpreted report (tiers vary) | ~3-4 weeks | DTC, tiered pricing |
| Co-Biome (MetaXplore) | Metagenomics + pathology markers | Ordered and reviewed via your practitioner | Varies | Practitioner-only |
| i-Screen Microbiome Check | Culture-based | Email support, paid consult optional | ~4 weeks | DTC, lower-cost |
Examples of Gut Microbiome Tests Available in Australia
Everlab Gut Microbiome Test
Everlab’s gut microbiome test is an at-home option that combines microbiome analysis with additional gastrointestinal markers and professional review. Rather than relying on a single sequencing method, it runs your stool sample across three separate panels, each using a purpose-built lab technique, and sits alongside Everlab’s broader biomarker testing if you want a fuller picture of your health.
The test includes:
- Microbial diversity scoring, since higher diversity is generally linked to better gut resilience
- Functional SCFA markers, including butyrate-producing and acetate-producing microbes, which are associated with gut barrier function and energy metabolism
- Zonulin and faecal pH among its additional gastrointestinal markers, while recognizing that zonulin has limitations and should not be interpreted as a stand-alone measure of intestinal permeability
- Methane-producing archaea, which may be relevant when evaluating digestive symptoms such as bloating
Everlab doesn’t just hand you a lab report, either. Every result goes through an Everlab doctor first to flag anything needing clinical follow-up, then an accredited dietitian translates the data into a personalised diet, lifestyle and supplement plan, walks you through it on video, and is available for a follow-up consult if you want to work through next steps. If anything warrants it, Everlab can also refer you on to a specialist, including gastroenterologists, within its network. The test costs $899 for Everlab members and $999 for non-members, covers all three panels plus the doctor and dietitian review, and results are typically ready within about four weeks.
Because the test includes professional review rather than relying entirely on self-interpretation, results come with additional context rather than a raw data report alone. For consumers who value clinician and dietitian involvement, that level of support distinguishes Everlab from many DTC-only microbiome kits. However, microbiome testing remains an evolving field and should not replace established diagnostic testing or medical evaluation.
Microba Microbiome Explorer
Microba is an ASX-listed, Brisbane-based precision microbiome company (ASX: MAP) and one of the pioneers of direct-to-consumer metagenomic testing in Australia, having launched DTC testing back in 2018. Its consumer-facing Microbiome Explorer range uses full metagenomic sequencing and offers tiered options (Essentials, Extended and Comprehensive) with an optional Gut Physiology Panel add-on for people where gut dysfunction or infection is suspected. Microba is also set to launch a dedicated GI Navigator test for complex GI symptoms in October 2026. Its full metagenomic sequencing provides species-level information, while the amount of interpretation support varies by testing tier.
Co-Biome (Microba’s MetaXplore range)
Co-Biome is Microba’s practitioner-channel brand, built around the MetaXplore test range (MetaXplore, MetaXplore GI and MetaXplore GI Plus). It combines traditional gastrointestinal pathology markers (pancreatic elastase, secretory IgA, zonulin and faecal pH) with metagenomic microbiome profiling, and is only accessible through a healthcare professional. Because it is practitioner-accessed, it may suit patients whose healthcare professional is already coordinating gastrointestinal testing, rather than consumers looking for a direct-to-consumer purchase.
i-Screen Microbiome Check (Nutripath)
i-Screen (by Nutripath) is a longer-standing DTC microbiome test on the Australian market, reviewed alongside Microba by consumer group CHOICE. Rather than metagenomic sequencing, it uses a culture-based method to measure bacteria and fungi levels, and includes tiered support options, from free email queries on your results through to a paid nutritionist consultation. It uses a different, culture-based approach and offers fewer functional and inflammatory markers than some of the other tests described above.
How to choose the right test for you
Consumers comparing microbiome tests should consider the testing method, markers included, level of professional interpretation, cost and intended purpose. More extensive testing may provide additional information, but a larger panel does not necessarily mean that every result has established clinical significance.
If you’re dealing with ongoing bloating, irregular digestion, fatigue or other persistent symptoms, speak with a healthcare professional rather than relying on a microbiome test to identify the cause.
One important caveat: a gut microbiome test is a wellness and insight tool, not a diagnostic replacement for clinical care. If you have persistent gastrointestinal symptoms, see your GP or a gastroenterologist first, since routine pathology testing will catch common pathogens and conditions that a microbiome test isn’t designed to diagnose.
