Caring For Your Aging Parents

Is taking on the care giving responsibility for your loved ones always the right thing to do? Many adult children and family members feel obligated to provide all the care for their aging parents or loved one. The reasons are many. Although it seems like the right approach it doesnt always work out as expected. Not for the parents or their children who pour their life and soul into being there when they need them.
Of course, the natural reaction is to help out and take on the role of caregiver whether it is part or full time. What is not expected is the impact it may have on your own relationship with that person, other siblings and or on your own immediate family.
When faced with a family care giving situation many factors need to be evaluated including
What will the impact be on your own life and family
Is it really possible to work together with your siblings and or other family members to agree on method and type of care needed. Will resentment develop?
Do your parents or family member really want you to make the sacrifice or would they rather enjoy your company as their son, daughter or niece or nephew as they always have.
Will your own health be impacted by the level of commitment you need to make in addition to your own personal responsibilities
You also need to be prepared for the possibility that your interactions and relationship with the one you are providing care for may change. Helping your father with a shower and or being the one to suggest to a loved one that they need to wear an adult diaper for the first time could change how they perceive you. Many times, providing adequate care requires hard truths and can leave scars. These tasks would be better off left to a home care provider who is there for that specific purpose. Family members should not feel guilty or obligated to provide personal tasks that may embarrass them or their family member.
Companies that provide home care can be a great alternative and allow you to decide how much or how little care you contribute. Look for an agency that has experience dealing with whatever specific illness or issues that your parent or loved one is facing. Quality home care providers have experience dealing with most situations you will encounter. If nothing else they can help you learn how best to care for your loved one.
