7 Tips For Women's Health

While women are traditionally the caregivers for their family, they often fall short when it comes to taking care of their own health.

Here are seven tips to help all women improve their health

1. Eat well. It is often easier said than done, but consuming a balanced diet goes a long way in maintaining one's health. At a minimum, do your best to add fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to your daily meals. Limit foods and drinks high in calories, sugar, salt, fat, and alcohol.

2. Be more active. Being more physically active doesn't mean you have to become a gym bunny. Adding a 10-15 minute brisk walk to your daily routine is a great first step to easing yourself into a more vigorous routine.

3. Manage stress. So many things can cause stress in our lives; however, effectively managing that stress is vital to a healthier you. Ask for help from a parent, friend, counselor, doctor, or pastor. Talk with them about the stress you feel and problems you face.

4. Stop smoking. While you have heard it before, it is worth repeating smoking kills. Smoking is an addiction but that is not an excuse for not quitting. For support in quitting, including free coaching and referrals to local resources, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

5. Know your family health history. Many illnesses such as cancer and heart disease are directly linked to our genes. By knowing the health history of your immediate family members (especially those of your mother and grandmother), you can identify your own risk profile and take steps early to help prevent future problems.

6. Stay vaccinated. Immunizations are not just for children. There are many vaccines for adults such as influenza, HPV, hepatitis, shingles and tetanus. You should speak with your primary care provider about which vaccines are recommended for you.

7. Find a primary care provider and have regular check-ups. A trusted primary care provider is an important partner in maintaining and improving your health. It is important to see your provider regularly and to stay current with all screenings.
