Could LASIK Improve My Appearance?
Well, the answer is maybe. Of course, the main reason to have LASIK eye surgery is for its vision correction benefits. But improving your appearance can be a by-product of the experience. In surveys, patients routinely report a variety of reasons why they elected to have LASIK surgery including convenience, safety, freedom, sports, hobby and job needs as well as improved appearance.
Some LASIK patients have worn glasses since they were very young children, and can’t imagine themselves without them. They become like an old friend. And, of course, there are many attractive choices of fashion eyewear available today. These patients remain perfectly happy with their glasses.
For others, their entire lives have been accompanied by familiar playground sayings like “four eyes.” Many feel uncomfortable in their glasses. Perhaps their vision is so poor that very thick lenses in their glasses are required. These patients have told me they feel like a new person after their LASIK surgery, oftentimes reporting an improved sense of self-confidence.
Patients appreciate the convenience of wearing contact lenses, but over time their eyes may become intolerant leading to dryness, tearing and redness. Many women find that make-up frequently coats contact lenses leading to irritation, redness and possible eye infections.
Many patients elect to have their LASIK vision correction procedure before a big event, not only for the improved vision but also for their improved appearance. Many brides schedule LASIK surgery before their weddings.
Over two million LASIK procedures have been performed worldwide since 1995. LASIK can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. And LASIK is the most widely performed elective procedure in the United States today.
The technology and results from the procedure are better than ever. The procedure itself is very quick. The actual laser time for each eye is only about 15 seconds and your time at the laser center is less than 30 minutes. Most patients say there is little or no pain during the procedure, and they are back to their normal activities the following day.
Of course, LASIK is a surgical procedure and results can vary so be sure to discuss your individual expectations. Read the informed consent and discuss all risks and consequences with your surgeon. The most important decision you can make is your choice of surgeon. Experience matters. Choosing a surgeon who has years of experience and has performed tens of thousands of LASIK procedures can improve your chances of having the best outcome. Look for a surgeon who will meet with you personally before the procedure and discuss all your expectations. Ask questions. Read about the procedure. Talk to former patients.
State-of-the-art technology advancement, in the hands of an experienced surgeon, has made the LASIK procedure better than it has ever been. If LASIK is right for you, perhaps you can improve your vision and improve your appearance.
