Guiding Healthy Growth, Function, and Development In Children and Young Adults

Childhood is a remarkable period of growth. While parents often pay attention to their child’s height, weight, and academic progress, one very important aspect of development is frequently overlooked – the growth of the jaws, airway, tongue posture and facial bones. These structures influence much more than a beautiful smile. They affect airway (breathing), sleep quality, posture, speech, chewing, swallowing and overall health.

An orthopedic/orthodontic treatment in guiding the jaws to grow correctly is the Advance Lightwire Functional (ALF) Appliances. Rather than simply straightening teeth, the ALF appliances work with the body’s natural growth processes, encouraging proper development and position of the jaws and supporting normal oral function during the years when the child is growing. Nasal breathing and proper tongue posture during swallowing has a direct effect on the development of the jaws and the posture.

If the child does not swallow properly, the tongue cannot assume its correct position preventing the upper jaw to develop properly leading to a very narrow palate (roof of the mouth) as the child grows. It also prevents the proper development of the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). If the swallowing pattern remains in infantile swallow (anterior tongue thrust), the TMJ remains flat in its development, resulting in temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). My examination revealed that this child was already exhibiting symptoms of TMD.

The tip of the tongue is not able to touch the roof of the mouth due to a tongue-tie. This contributes to the improper swallowing preventing the upper jaw to grow horizontally as the child is growing. 

Anterior Tongue Thrust: tongue is thrusted forward during swallowing instead of resting on the roof of the mouth.  This habit creates a narrow upper jaw.

The goal of the ALF treatment extends beyond creating a beautiful smile. By addressing the relationship between jaw development, tongue posture, nasal breathing, and oral function during the critical years of growth, we can help establish a healthier foundation for the child’s health and guide facial growth to move towards the right direction. Through early evaluation and a functional approach to treatment, ALF appliances can play an important role in guiding proper development, supporting balance, and improving the overall quality of life for growing children and young adults.
