Pain, the Elusive Companion: Using Jin Shin Jyutsu For Relief

Pain is a protective modality. Pain differs from the classical senses such as hearing, smell, taste, touch, and vision because it is both a discriminative sensation and a graded emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. Because of this our body does not just let us turn it off without knowing that it is safe.

Is tinnitus pain? No, of course not, if you look at it from a clinical perspective. It is a constant ringing in one or both ears. However, it inflicts a response in the brain, which is as close as it gets to that of a pain response. It’s like an alarm bell, which keeps on ringing to signal that there is an issue.

Is there no escape?

Pain is life saving. What we want to turn off is the response when we know the body is safe. Without getting too much into the individual pathology of pain, there are tricks to help your brain to not respond to pain. There are ways to redirect the pain responses and ease your discomfort with Jin Shin Jyutsu®.

Jin Shin Jyutsu focuses to bring one’s body to a more harmonious state. It is an ancient healing art that brings harmony through gentle touch. These gentle touches are directed towards specific areas of the body to bring balance and restore energy flow to a more peaceful state.

It sometimes can be very hard when you first begin Jin Shin Jyutsu exercises but the trick is not to give up and to continue to do it. Here is a simple finger exercise that can help you manage your pain:

1. Listen to either white noise or ocean waves on your headphones. This brings calmness and helps you change focus.

2. With one hand, gently hold the other at each specific finger: your thumb, index finger, middle finger and then ring finger. Hold each for about five minutes or longer if you desire to do so.

3. During each finger hold you will feel pulses in both hands eventually synchronize in rhythm.

4. Control your breathing and continue this process.
