Fill A Prescription for Happiness Without Visiting the Pharmacy

I want to be happy.
“In my more than sixty years of practicing psychiatry,” explains Dr. Arnold Gilberg, “more than anything else, that’s what patients say when I ask them why they came to see me. Because for many, happiness is a holy grail: elusive and fleeting, or even unattainable.”
That’s why Gilberg decided to write A PRESCRIPTION FOR HAPPINESS, a follow-up to his bestseller “The Myth of Aging.” Over seven sections covering more than forty topics, he lays out detailed steps and lifestyle practices aimed at helping readers live their best life at any age. That’s not only the book’s subtitle, but also its mission statement, as well as what distinguishes this title from his first.
“’The Myth of Aging,’” he explains, “deals with a population of people who are aging, and they want to find new ways to keep living as if aging is not taking place. A PRESCRIPTION FOR HAPPINESS is very different because it’s directed at our entire population to help everyone come to a better place about what makes them happy.”
But why write a book exclusively about the pursuit of happiness?
“Because most people struggle with not being as happy as they want to be. The first lesson the book teaches people is that the roller coaster of life doesn’t allow anyone to be happy all the time. And they’re not going to find a way around that on social media where many people go looking. Instead, they should be starting with their mental and physical health, which is where all happiness begins.”
Toward that end, Gilberg’s “prescriptions” focus on practical lifestyle approaches that readers can consider in their own lives. The book presents these ideas as a roadmap for thinking about happiness, well-being, and the factors that may contribute to a more fulfilling life.
“I think happiness is ours to control,” Gilberg reflects, “but too many people cede that control to others. First and foremost, we have to recognize what makes us happy and not listen to others trying to do it for us.”
Speaking of ceding control, Gilberg’s daughter Suzanne, an acclaimed gynecologist and bestselling author in her own right (“Menopause Bootcamp”), penned the book’s final section dedicated exclusively to women.
“Suzanne is an expert in women’s health,” he explains, “and I wanted to include more material specific to women in this book. I felt that would be best achieved by turning this section over to someone uniquely qualified to address the pursuit of happiness as it pertains to women.”
What about a third book?
“I’d love to write one, because I think the aging process is made easier by being productive, working as much as I can and sharing my knowledge with the community. It’s my way of giving back to the world for everything it’s given me.”
Arnold Gilberg’s A PRESCRIPTION FOR HAPPINESS will be published in January of 2027 by Post Hill Press.
