How to Check If a Chiropractor Is Licensed in Dubai
Why licence verification matters before you book
Manual therapy involves someone applying force to your spine and joints. That is a reasonable thing to do when the person doing it has been assessed, verified and registered by a health regulator. It is not a reasonable thing to do when they have not.
The good news is that the UAE makes this easy to check. Every practising chiropractor in the country appears on a public register maintained by the health authority for the emirate they work in, and anyone can search it in under two minutes without an account, a fee or a phone call. Very few patients know this, which is why this guide exists.
Who regulates chiropractic in the UAE
There is no single national register. The UAE has three health regulators, and which one applies depends entirely on where the clinic is located, not on where the practitioner trained or previously worked.
- Dubai Health Authority (DHA) regulates every healthcare professional and facility in Dubai.
- Department of Health, Abu Dhabi (DOH) regulates Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Al Dhafra region.
- Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) regulates the northern emirates, covering Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.
These are separate legal bodies with separate registers. A licence issued by one does not automatically permit practice under another. A chiropractor with a valid DOH licence in Abu Dhabi is not licensed to treat you in Dubai until they have completed a DHA process of their own. If you are booking in Dubai, the DHA register is the one that matters.
How to check a chiropractor’s licence on the DHA Sheryan portal
Sheryan is the DHA’s online licensing system, and it includes a public search function. You do not need to register.
- Go to the DHA Sheryan portal at sheryan.dha.gov.ae.
- Select Search Health Professional from the public services area. There is a separate option, Search Health Facility, which you should also use to check the clinic itself.
- Search by the practitioner’s full name, their licence number if you have it, or by specialisation.
- Read the record that comes back and check it against the three points in the next section.
A practical tip: search by surname alone if the full name returns nothing. Records are held under the name as it appears on the passport and official documents, which is not always the name a clinic uses on its website. If a clinic advertises someone as “Dr. Sam” and you cannot find a record, ask reception for the full registered name. A legitimate clinic will give it to you without hesitation.
What the search result actually tells you
The record returns more than a yes or no. It typically shows the practitioner’s full name, nationality, primary qualification, specialisation, licence type, the facility they are registered with, the licence status and the expiry date. Three of those fields do the real work.
Licence status. This should read Active. If it shows as suspended, revoked, expired or anything other than active, do not proceed with treatment and do not accept a verbal explanation from the clinic. Status changes are recorded for a reason.
The registered facility. A DHA professional licence is activated by an employing facility, and the register shows which one. If the record lists a different clinic from the one you are booking with, that practitioner is not currently licensed to treat you at that address. This is one of the most common and least understood gaps, and it matters more than most patients realise.
Specialisation. Confirm the record actually says chiropractic. Manual therapy is delivered by several regulated professions in the UAE, including physiotherapists and osteopaths, and the scopes are not interchangeable. If you have specifically sought out a chiropractor in Dubai rather than another manual therapist, the register will tell you whether that is what you are getting.
What a chiropractor has to complete before that licence exists
Understanding what sits behind the licence helps you interpret what you are looking at. The DHA pathway for chiropractors runs roughly as follows.
The applicant first completes a self-assessment through Sheryan to establish eligibility. They must hold an accredited chiropractic degree from a recognised institution of higher education, and DHA published requirements have specified a substantial programme length running across four academic years with a defined clinical component involving direct patient contact. They must also hold a current licence to practise in their home country or country of last employment, and demonstrate recent practice without a lengthy interruption.
Every credential then goes through Primary Source Verification via DataFlow, which contacts the issuing universities and licensing bodies directly rather than accepting uploaded copies. Applicants also submit a Certificate of Good Standing from their previous regulator, confirming no history of professional misconduct. Depending on qualification and experience, an assessment exam or oral examination may be required. Only after all of that does DHA issue eligibility, and only then can an employing facility activate the licence. Licences are renewed annually and practitioners are expected to maintain continuing professional development.
One myth worth correcting
A lot of online content states that a chiropractor must hold a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree. That is the standard qualification route in the United States and Canada, but it is not the only recognised one. Chiropractors trained in the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia and much of Europe qualify through Bachelor and Master degree programmes at accredited institutions, and these are equally recognised by UAE regulators. The question to ask is not whether the letters after the name are DC, but whether the awarding institution is accredited and the licence is active on the register. Chiropractors practising in Dubai may have trained through accredited programs in countries such as the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, Europe, Canada, or the United States, provided they meet the licensing requirements of the applicable UAE health authority.
The clinic needs a licence too
Professional licensing and facility licensing are separate processes. A DHA-licensed chiropractor working from a premises that does not hold a valid DHA facility licence is not operating legitimately, and this occasionally shows up in home-visit arrangements, gyms, hotel spas and pop-up wellness setups.
Use the Search Health Facility function on Sheryan alongside the practitioner search. Both should return active records, and the practitioner record should name the facility you are attending. A properly established multidisciplinary rehabilitation clinic in Dubai will hold facility licensing, professional licensing for every clinician, and a MOHAP medical advertisement licence covering the health claims it publishes. That last one is worth noting: clinics advertising treatment in the UAE are required to hold an advertising licence, and reputable clinics display the number publicly, usually in the website footer.
Warning signs worth taking seriously
- Reception cannot or will not provide a practitioner’s full registered name or licence number when asked.
- The register shows the practitioner attached to a different facility.
- Treatment is offered at a location with no visible facility licensing, such as a private residence or a gym floor.
- You are asked to commit to a long prepaid package before any assessment has taken place.
- Marketing language promises outcomes or cures for conditions outside musculoskeletal scope. Regulated advertising in the UAE does not permit guaranteed outcome claims.
- Qualifications are described vaguely, for example “internationally certified”, with no named awarding institution.
What to ask before your first appointment
Three questions cover most of it. What is the practitioner’s full registered name and DHA licence number? Which facility is that licence activated under? And what does the initial assessment involve before any treatment begins?
A clinic that answers all three plainly is a clinic that expects to be checked. That is the standard you should be applying. Verification takes two minutes, costs nothing, and is the single most useful thing you can do before letting anyone work on your spine.
Frequently asked questions
Is chiropractic a regulated profession in the UAE?
Yes. Chiropractors must hold a professional licence from the health authority governing the emirate where they practise, which means DHA in Dubai, DOH in Abu Dhabi and MOHAP in the northern emirates.
Can I check a chiropractor’s licence myself?
Yes. The DHA Sheryan portal at sheryan.dha.gov.ae has a public Search Health Professional function. No account or fee is required, and you can search by name, licence number or specialisation.
Does a DHA licence allow a chiropractor to practise anywhere in the UAE?
No. Each authority maintains its own register and licences are not automatically transferable between emirates, although formal conversion processes exist for practitioners who relocate.
Do I need a doctor’s referral to see a chiropractor in Dubai?
Chiropractors in Dubai practise as primary contact practitioners, so a referral is not generally required to book. Your insurance policy may require one for reimbursement, so check with your provider before your appointment.
What if the licence record shows an expired date?
Licences are renewed annually and a lapsed record should be raised with the clinic before treatment. If the status field does not read Active, postpone the appointment until it does.
