Visions Of the Ghosts Of Christmas

Most of us have seen the play and/or musical version of A Christmas Carol, the classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge as he has visions of the ghost of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Ebenezer's vision was unique to his experience and changed his perspective on his life and his interactions with everyone in his world.

The ghosts improved Ebenezer's vision and enabled him to see more clearly.

We all have experiences that shape our lives, impact our vision, and influence what we see and how we interact with the world.

When we are open to the influences of our previous experiences and the potential impact of our present behavior and attitudes on our futures, we too can have that life changing experience that will enrich our lives and those we touch in our daily lives.

Having worked most of my career in healthcare administration, I'd like to relate the story A Christmas Carol to our experience with an ophthalmologist.

To do that, we need to make an appointment to invest the time for an examination; yes it takes time. Everything of value requires an investment. In the examination, we will take a history of what has gone on before. We will look at the experiences that life has sent our way and the impact those experiences have had on us. We will consider the prescriptions we have tried in the past and take stock of the reactions to those interventions.

We will record our present conditions and relate the present, the past and the interventions we have tried. Our doctor will order special tests of how we see the world and then educate and involve us in order to analyze and evaluate the findings.

He or she will guide us by making recommendations to improve our future.

The recommendations may be prescriptive, surgical, activity related or referral to other specialists. A good doctor will show you the future if you continue your present path and will guide you home to reflect on how to create a different future.

Ultimately, the motivation to improve will come from inside you. You will need to wear the prescribed glasses or contacts; you will need to heal from surgery; you will need to instill the medications; you will need to see the specialist and implement the recommendations.

Healthcare is a special kind of intervention into our lives by highly educated, well trained and very skilled men and women who, like the ghosts of the past, present and future, help us to change to improve our future.

As we celebrate this holiday season, close another year, and look forward to 2017, we all need to visit a special ophthalmologist, a unique medical doctor of vision, to enable us to improve our vision for the future.
