Do not begin TENS without medical guidance if you have a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator, neurostimulator, or another implanted electronic device. People who are pregnant or who have epilepsy, heart disease, abnormal heart rhythms, cancer, a blood clot, a bleeding disorder, or substantially reduced skin sensation should also consult an appropriate healthcare professional first. Do not rely on electric patches to manage new, unexplained, rapidly worsening, or severe pain. Prompt evaluation is especially important when pain occurs with chest pressure, difficulty breathing, fainting, fever, significant swelling, a visibly deformed limb, sudden weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or symptoms following a serious injury.

Schedule an evaluation if pain repeatedly disrupts sleep, work, mobility, or normal activities, or if it continues beyond expected healing.
