Does It Hurt To Have Sex?

If you answered, “yes”, you are not alone. There are many women who experience pain and discomfort from sex, without any clear reason for it, seeking medical help without relief. There are cases where it may appear that the problem is hormonal and some people, even doctors, may say, “its all in your head.”

Some women seek help for several years before they find the reason for their pain. But, there may be some well-established and scientifically proven reasons why its no fun in bed.

As a gynecologist, I have encountered many women with problems that can be difficult to diagnose, but, many times, there is a common reason why women have pain during sex, or chronic pelvic pain. Its called interstitial cystitis (IC) or painful bladder syndrome (PBS) and there is most likely a simple treatment.

The symptoms of IC or PBS occur more frequently in women. While pain with intercourse is a common finding, other symptoms relate to frequent, even painful, urination. The reality is that this problem comes and goes and is sometimes enhanced by stress or intercourse. IC/PBS is a chronic inflammatory condition of the bladder wall resulting in hypersensitivity of the nerves around the bladder and the vagina. No two women are the same, each has her own set of symptoms, which can vary from one day to the next.

Thats why its so important to make sure you find a physician who is familiar with IC/PBS and its treatment; one who carefully listens to your problems and understands how they impact your life. Yes, there are many causes of chronic pelvic pain, but if accurately identified, IC/PBS can be effectively treated.

We have seen many womens lives change as they experience relief. If you think that you may suffer from this condition, now is the time to take action.
