Pursuing a Rewarding Career in Social Work

Pursuing a Rewarding Career in Social Work

A career in social work allows you to improve the lives of many people. From young people to families and those older citizens, you can touch (and impact) many people’s lives. Social work gives you the chance to have a rewarding career. Pursuing this rewarding career is possible and highly achievable.

Establishing Your Starting Point and Your Goals

To get things going, you are going to need to establish your starting point. For instance, are you in a healthcare career or role already, or is this a new move you will make? Are you starting with a bachelor’s degree (but not in a relevant field)? When you know your starting point, you can begin working on those future goals too. Being realistic yet ambitious at this stage is essential. For instance, one of your goals may be to study for a master’s and get the role you want within the next 2-3 years.

Furthering Your Education Online

Now that you know what you must do and what your goals are moving forwards, you need to focus on your education. A lot of social work careers expect a master’s. The good news is that you can study for a social worker online master’s degree in (and around) your existing commitments. Furthering your education online will give you more control over your time, and it will ensure you study when you have the time and energy. This will mean you will not end up feeling overwhelmed.

Building Your Skills and Awareness

A rewarding career in social work will open up the possibility of learning new skills and raising levels of awareness. This, of course, has to be something that you embrace at all times. When you start working on gaining these new skills (even while studying), you will be ready to succeed in your new role. Looking at what makes a good social worker and seeing what their skill set comprises will give you a good indication of what you should be focusing on.

Decide Which Area You Would Like to Focus On

No two roles in social work are the same, and it is important that you choose an area that is true to you. For instance, do you want to focus on a role that helps younger people? Or would you like to focus on older people? Once you decide on an area, you then have the focus to hone and perfect your skills.

Adopting the Right Mindset

Social work is demanding, and you will find that no two days are the same. To get the most out of your studies and out of your career, you are going to need to embrace the right mindset. Knowing what difference you want to make in social work and the lives of others is always a good place to start. Your mindset is going to need to be positive, focused, and targeted. When you realize the impact and difference you will have on the lives and well-being of others, you will find that adopting and maintaining the right mindset is a lot easier.
