Your Claim Was Denied- What Next?

A family here in Northern Virginia felt they had been wronged by one of the largest retail chains in the U.S. They felt that their health plan covered applied behavioral analysis (ABA) therapy for their child, but the company disagreed. These situations can be incredibly tough for families. No one thinks in advance that they'll end up suing someone, so when it happens, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and exhausted. What options do you have when up against a company with an army of lawyers?

Going to court is no easy decision. There are so many factors to consider and procedures to learn about, all while trying to live your life as normally as possible. Can I afford a lawyer? If I've been wronged, how long will I have to wait before I'm compensated? Do I have to take out loans just to even fight this thing? How do I know if it's worth it or not when I have no experience with this sort of thing?

The good news is you're not alone, and in many cases you may not need a lawyer. When the time comes, however, and you're asking these sorts of questions, you need to find a lawyer who's a good fit for your situation. Take a good, honest look at your budget, and then seek sound legal advice.

Look for lawyers who are authorities in their field, not a jack-of-all-trades and a master of none. Good lawyers will have written books on the subject, and come recommended by other lawyers and clients. If the same names keep coming up when you ask people for legal references, that's a good sign.

Look for attorneys who will give you free reports and help educate you about the process. Don't be afraid to trust your gut; if you don't like your lawyer in the first interview, chances are you never will.

Even if your claim has been denied, there is still hope. Good legal representation can walk you through the process and find holes in cases that can leave even big retailers stunned.

Most people don't think about these things until the race has already started, but if you know your goals for your case ahead of time you'll have success in finding a reliable lawyer who shares your views and will take good care of your claim.
