First Surgeon To Offer LensAR FDA Approved Laser Refractive Cataract System
The LensAR Laser System provides surgeons the ability to tailor patient's cataract procedure.
Solomon Eye Physicians & Surgeons has become the first ophthalmology practice in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. to offer cataract surgery with the LensAR system. LensAR combines a state-of-the-art femtosecond laser, advanced 3D Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging, sophisticated software and a host of other unique features that enable surgeons to provide patients a gentle, highly customized procedure with unprecedented precision. With the LensAR Laser System, Dr. Jonathan D. Solomon can remove cataracts in a more advanced way, using a laser. Using the LensAR Laser System ensures that advanced, customized cataract procedures can be performed with laser precision.
“I am happy to offer the community the most advanced method of refractive cataract treatment.” said Jonathan D. Solomon, M.D.
A cataract is an age-related condition in which the lens of the eye becomes progressively cloudy, making vision fuzzy and normal daily living activities more difficult. Cataract surgery is the only treatment for cataracts and is one of the most common procedures performed worldwide, estimated at 19 million cases per year. In the traditional (non-laser) procedure, the surgeon must perform several critical steps by hand. This manual approach limits predictability and precision, potentially affecting visual outcomes and complication rates. In recent years, femtosecond laser technology has been incorporated into cataract surgery to enhance the precision, accuracy and customization of the procedure. The LensAR Laser System represents the next generation of this technology and has been shown in clinical study to deliver precision that is unequaled in the industry. Solomon Eye Physicians & Surgeons are now offering the LensAR Laser System as part of their advanced cataract procedure with the goal of reducing the dependency on glasses or contact lenses, and use the same proven laser technology that's been used in LASIK procedures for over a decade.
How the LensAR Laser Works
LensAR's 3-D imaging, Augmented Reality, takes a more intelligent approach to cataract surgery. With Augmented Reality, surgeons can make more accurate laser incisions that prior to the LensAR laser were done manually, and without the 3-D view of the eye. It is LensAR's precision, imaging, and laser incisions that help surgeons provide patients with better visual outcomes. LensAR, Inc., is a leader in the development and commercialization of the next-generation laser and advanced 3D imaging technology for refractive cataract surgery.
Using LensAR, surgeons can access and remove the cataractous lens with accuracy that is approximately 10 times greater than that achieved with manual technique. The precision and accuracy of these steps sets the stage for the positioning of the replacement lens. Proper positioning is especially important with advanced technology lenses that are designed to enable both near and far vision without contacts or glasses. These lenses demand a level of precision, accuracy and customization that traditional manual surgery struggles to provide. In addition to its accuracy benefits, LensAR's sophisticated laser technology makes break-up and removal of the cataract easier and gentler on the patient. A clinical study has shown that LensAR reduces the amount of ultrasound energy needed during this step by approximately 96 percent, an improvement that may enhance procedure safety. Laser treatment with LensAR takes approximately three minutes and causes little or no discomfort to patients.
About LensAR
LensAR, Inc. is the leading developer of next generation laser technology for cataract surgery and presbyopia. The LensAR Laser System, which integrates an advanced ultra short pulse laser with propriety ocular measurement and laser scanning technologies, is being designed to allow physicians to perform several of the steps in cataract surgery (capsulotomy, lens fragmentation, precise astigmatic corrections and unique clear corneal incisions) in a single laser procedure. In addition to advancing its laser technology in the area of cataract surgery, the company is also developing the LensAR Laser System for the treatment of presbyopia.
