Echocardiography in Dubai: What an Echo Shows, the Different Types and How to Prepare

What Is An Echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart. It uses sound waves rather than radiation, so it is safe to repeat as often as needed. The images show the heart moving in real time: the four chambers, the valves opening and closing, and the thickness of the heart walls.

From those images, a cardiologist can measure how well the heart pumps, usually expressed as the ejection fraction. The Different Types

The most commonly used test is a transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE). During the scan, you lie on your side while a small amount of gel is placed on the chest. The sonographer then moves the ultrasound probe over different areas of the chest to obtain images of the heart. The test usually takes around 30–45 minutes and does not normally require any special preparation.

Doppler imaging is usually performed during the same examination. It shows how blood moves through the heart and can help assess whether a valve is narrowed or leaking. 3D echocardiography provides more detailed views of the heart and can be useful when doctors are assessing a patient for certain valve procedures.

A stress echocardiogram looks at how the heart functions when it is working harder. This may involve exercising on a treadmill or stationary bicycle, or receiving medication that increases the heart rate. Changes seen during the test may help doctors assess whether there is reduced blood flow to part of the heart. Patients should wear comfortable clothing and follow the instructions given by their healthcare team about regular medicines.

A transoesophageal echo, often called TOE, is used when a closer view is needed, for example to look for clots or to examine a valve in fine detail. After your throat is numbed and you are sedated, a thin probe is passed down the food pipe, which sits right behind the heart. You will need to fast for several hours beforehand, and you should not drive for the rest of the day.

What an Echo Cannot Tell You?

An echo is very good at showing structure and pumping function, but it does not show the coronary arteries directly. If blocked arteries are suspected, your doctor may recommend CT coronary angiography or invasive angiography instead of, or as well as, an echo. A normal echo is reassuring, but it does not rule out every heart problem.

What Is the Difference Between an Echo and an ECG?

An ECG records the electrical activity of the heart through electrodes placed on the skin and usually takes only a few minutes. An echocardiogram uses ultrasound to examine the heart’s chambers, valves and movement. Since the two tests provide different information, a doctor may request both as part of a cardiac assessment.
