Frequently Asked Questions
About Orthodontics

Most patients have similar questions about orthodontic treatment, so here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.

1. Do I need a referral from
my family dentist to see
an orthodontist?

No, you do not, and many patients come on their own, although most patients are referred by their family dentist.

2. At what age should I schedule an appointment for an
orthodontic screening?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic screening at age seven.

3. Will my childs teeth straighten out on their own as they grow?

No, they will not. The space available for the front teeth does not increase as a child grows.

Not usually. Most orthodontists believe that the relationship established during a patients first visit is much more important than an office visit charge.

5. What will happen at the initial examination appointment?

The orthodontist will conduct a brief but thorough examination to determine if there is enough room to hold all the teeth, if the top teeth are lined up correctly with the bottom teeth, if any teeth are crooked or not growing in the right position and if there are missing or extra teeth.

Breathing problems, finger or tongue habits and any jaw joint problems should also be addressed.

6. Will I have to have any teeth removed for braces?

Straight teeth, a good bite, and a balanced facial profile are always the goal. Because of todays advanced technology, the need for removing teeth has been greatly reduced.

7. How long will it take to
complete treatment?

In general, treatment times range from 15 to 28 months. On average, if braces are needed, they are worn for 24 months.

8. How much will braces cost?

How often will I
