Breakthrough Technology Zirconia Dental Implants

Dental implants are best described as anchors that permanently support crowns or dentures, providing the most natural tooth replacement after tooth loss. Dental implants are preferred over traditional bridges because they are more conservative and minimally invasive. Therefore with implants there is no need to file down the surrounding teeth. However over the last ten years there have been increasing reports of implant failures, which are attributed to metal sensitivity and titanium's long term vulnerability to the oral environment. Today there is breakthrough technology, Zirconia, also called ceramic dental implants, which are available only through certified dentists in the United States.

Zirconia is a bioceramic and it is very stable, hygienic and it's as strong as diamonds in terms of resistance to fracture and tolerating the harsh environment of the oral cavity. Zirconia does not conduct temperature and as a benefit one does not have to be concerned about having hot tea or a cold drink. The temperature of your food or beverage is not transmitted to the bone therefore increasing the implant's life. Titanium being a metal tends to release ions and it susceptible to corrosion attack when exposed to oral and other body fluids. In case you have other metal fillings and restorations in your mouth titanium implants and their superstructures (crowns) create low level electrical currents that can lead to bone loss, gum discoloration, jaw pain and eventually implant failure, this is not the case with zirconia implants or zirconia as a biomaterial in general.

Zirconia implants have superior physical properties compared to titanium implants; they do not accumulate plaque and they integrate bone as well as titanium implants. Zirconia implants are the only option for those who are or might be allergic to metals. In our practice we have seen patients developing muscle and joint pain, fatigue and rashes after having had titanium implants placed in their jaws. Zirconia implants are also of great benefit to individuals who are missing teeth, whose dentures are loose and to those who just don't want metals in their mouths.
