Who Uses Acupuncture?

People from newborns to elders benefit from acupuncture treatment. You probably know several peoples who use acupuncture for a variety of reasons. For example, a newborn with colic or GERD can have their distress calmed via the use of acupuncture or acupressure treatment. Acupuncture can be used by school age children and teenagers to deal with sports injuries or allergies. Elders use acupuncture to decrease pain and increase mobility which positively impacts their enjoyment of life.

Pain is a factor that brings many people to the acupuncturist. Everyone has some situation in which pain occurs throughout life. Whether an acute injury of a long-term symptom, acupuncture can reduce pain and often eliminate it as well as enhance the speed of healing injuries.

One of the main issues people bring to acupuncture is stress. There are many symptoms that arise from life stress. These include physical illness, insomnia, pain, IBS, anxiety and depression, PMS, menopausal symptoms and migraine headaches. Stress develops as the body’s natural reaction to potential danger, the so-called fight or flight mechanism. Unfortunately, in the modern world we generally don’t have the ability to exercise either fight or flight in stressful situations so our bodies develop symptoms due to the repression of those natural tendencies.

Acupuncture can calm the distress that arises from daily stressors. It promotes relaxation, improves stress-induced memory less, improves mood and reduces inflammation to name a few effects. Treatment with acupuncture can reduce the stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol as well as increase the release of endorphins, the feel good hormones.

In addition acupuncture can help calm the mind, decreasing obsessive thoughts or those nagging thoughts that prevent a person from falling asleep.
