Ladies Take a Deep Breath

This issue of Your Health Magazine is devoted to women's health, and just in time, too. Women tend to take care of everyone else, often putting their own needs at the bottom of their to-do list. It comes as no surprise, then, that women are more likely than men to suffer from a wide variety of diseases and disorders.

It turns out that pausing for just 20 to 25 minutes each day to take a few deep breaths and visualize yourself being healthy, and living your best life, can actually help you to get healthier, and be able to actually live life as you visualize it. Okay, we're really talking about meditation and visualization, and it all starts by taking a deep breath.

Dr. Herbert Benson, in his most recent book Relaxation Revolution, explains the physiology behind this process of meditating and visualizing yourself being healthy. Likewise, Dr. Richard Surwit, author of The Mind-Body Diabetes Revolution, has spent decades studying the effect of meditation on patients with diabetes.

Did you know that you may be able to control your blood sugar by meditating regularly? That's right, you may hold the keys to your own health, right under your hat. Think about that.

After reading these books, you might want to mark your calendar. Dr. Benson will be the keynote speaker of Mind-Body Week DC, which is being held October 13-16 this year.

Besides meeting one of the most famous mind-body researchers in the country, you will rub elbows with the Metropolitan DC area's leading mind-body health practitioners.

If you are thinking about learning what all the hoopla is about, remember, meditation is simple, but it is not necessarily easy. Just like learning to play a musical instrument or perfecting an athletic maneuver, it takes practice and patience. Even the music and sports pros continue to practice and hone their skills, and meditation is no different.

Everyone can learn to meditate. If you are not sure how to get started, consult with a wellness coach who specializes in mind-body techniques.
