How Chiropractors Help Patients With Chronic Pain

Chronic pain – especially back pain – can be an extremely debilitating condition. It impacts our work, family life, relationships, sleep, and lifestyle. If you are someone who is struggling with pain, it’s in your interest to learn what a chiropractor can do for you.

Adjustments and Manipulation

A chiropractic adjustment, also known as chiropractic manipulation, manual manipulation, or spinal manipulation, is the primary chiropractic treatment method for back pain. Spinal manipulation relieves pressure on joints, reduces inflammation, and improves nerve function.

There are well over 100 types of adjustment techniques used by chiropractors. Some practitioners may use force and twisting, while other techniques are more gentle. Regardless of how they are performed, these techniques are intended to restore or enhance joint functions with the objectives of reducing pain and resolving joint inflammation. It is also used to treat conditions such as allergies, menstrual cramps and headaches.

Spinal Decompression

Back pain due to a herniated or bulging disc can be debilitating, and in the past, surgery was the answer. Today, we have highly-successful advanced technology that may allow us to relieve this pain without surgery.

Using this computer technology and the decompression machine, we are able to create a custom treatment plan that decompresses the spine and can pull the herniated or bulging material back into the disc. It gently stretches and relaxes the spine in rotation, which, over time, separates the vertebrae. This creates a vacuum-like effect that pulls the soft bulging disc material back into the disc. This can not only clear up back pain, but also any pain caused by the pressure put on the nerves.

Chiropractic Massage Therapy

When chiropractic care is used in conjunction with massage therapy, both treatments work together to create a harmonious effect, resulting in a much faster recovery time for the patient. When the body becomes more relaxed through massage, it allows the doctor of chiropractic to smoothly realign various parts of it.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation

Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is an increasingly popular treatment that works well for soft tissue injuries, muscle spasms, and even for athletes who want quicker recovery from workouts. It creates tiny contractions in the muscles so they become tired and relax, relieving pain and muscle spasms. In addition, it triggers the release of endorphins, which are our body’s natural pain reliever.

Cold Laser Therapy

Cold laser therapy is a treatment that utilizes specific wavelengths of light to interact with tissue and is known to accelerate the healing process of a variety of clinical conditions, such as acute and chronic pain, sprains, strains, injures, tendonitis, arthritis, carpal tunnel, and more.

These treatment approaches are a few examples of how chiropractors can potentially alleviate pain symptoms without the use of surgery or drugs. Contact a local chiropractor to learn more.
