How To Take Care Of Your Sensitive Winter Skin
Winter winds and dropping temperatures reduce our skin’s moisture levels and deplete its natural defenses. The changes can make skin flaky, itchy, dry, red and irritated. If you have sensitive skin, your symptoms may be even more severe.
When freezing weather launches its attack, it’s not always enough to use over-the-counter unscented products or to avoid certain ingredients. Fortunately, you can battle sensitive skin in winter with preventative and ongoing treatments at a facility and skin care that includes several key elements.
It’s important to make sure that your sensitive skin gets exfoliated properly by doing a treatment one time a month and that it gets plenty of added moisture plus has the proper balance of nutrients to repair itself and retain moisture properly.
Serums contain smaller molecules than typical moisturizers. While both are beneficial, serums penetrate more deeply and deliver concentrated nutrients to your skin’s cells. Serums with anti-inflammatory properties are especially helpful when sensitive skin and winter combined produce redness and itching or chapped skin. You can also choose from serums with antioxidant or anti-aging ingredients.
After applying your skin serums daily, seal your skin with a moisturizer and protect your skin with a sunscreen, even in the winter. Your skin responds to your internal moisture levels too, drink plenty of fluids to compensate for dry winter air both inside and outside your home.
When you’re wrapped in a scarf and shivering as you are doing your skiing or treading through snow, the sun’s effect on your skin is probably the last thing on your mind. In reality, the sun can just as easily damage your skin in the winter cold as it can in the summer heat.
The sun’s rays can exacerbate sensitive skin symptoms, especially when they reflect off a snowy, white landscape. Sun damage also eventually leads to premature skin aging, discoloration and in some cases even skin cancer. Wear a quality sunscreen that protects your vulnerable, sensitive skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Apply it every time you spend time outside.
Keeping your skin healthy year-round requires good habits, good products and consistency. Maintain your skin care routine diligently and take a smart, multifaceted approach so your skin can look and feel great even when Winter delivers it’s icy days.
