Beware Butt Augmentation

Buttocks augmentation is not as simple as it sounds which is why it is among the least commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States. Yet in the last two years, this procedure has increased in popularity and has become among the more searched and sought after procedures in cosmetic surgery. There are many ways you can get a butt augmentation but only a few safe approaches have proven safe and effective. Since the buttocks have a different anatomy, augmenting them requires the skills of a physician with advanced training and extensive experience.

A former Miss Argentina made headlines last year when she reportedly died from complications of buttocks augmentation injections. The product used in her unfortunate case was industrial silicone. This dangerous “liquid”, with commercial names such as PMMA, Polymethylmetacrylate, Hydrogel, Silikon 1000, or Aquamid is the root cause of many failed and dangerous butt augmentation procedures.

The goal in this article is to educate patients about the potential dangers of butt augmentation by injections of unsafe, counterfeit or illegally imported cosmetic injectables. The injections are usually performed by unqualified or poorly trained physicians or unlicensed individuals. It is important to keep in mind that to date, the FDA has not approved any commercial filler for buttocks augmentation. The only approved procedure in the US is fat grafting or autologous fat injection from the patient's own body.

Liquid silicone injections have many serious disadvantages. To start, the product is expensive, with costs ranging from $300 to $500 per cubic centimeter (cc). Since an average butt augmentation procedure would requires several hundreds cubic centimeters of liquid silicone, high cost has became a prohibitive factor, thereby creating a market for cheaper (and potentially more dangerous) impure versions or substitutes of the liquid silicone.

Despite its high cost factor, liquid silicone results are typically temporary and short lasting. But the most important factor in avoiding liquid silicone is the danger that lies in complications that may arise later. Since liquid silicone is an industrial and not a biological product, silicone might result in abscesses, dangerous infections, or hardening of the injected site and skin slough that might require surgical intervention.

That is why it is impossible to find a reputable, highly-qualified physician performing butt augmentation using injectables materials in the US since none have been approved by the FDA. Instead, fat injections, using fat from the patient's own body, is the standard approach to successful and safe buttocks augmentation. A cosmetic surgeon, with vast experience in fat transfer and a proven successful record in harvesting and grafting technique, is the only uniquely qualified professional to perform such a critical procedure.

Our message is simple If you would like to a have a butt augmentation procedure to enhance the way you look and feel, why settle for an industrial liquid used to produce tables and plastic sheets instead of your own body fat?

Before deciding on a butt augmentation procedure, it is important to ask these questions

Is the performing physician board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?

Has the FDA approved the products for butt augmentation?

Are the results permanent?

Only your board-certified plastic surgeon can give you the buttocks augmentation you desire under a safe and effective procedure with permanent results by using your own body fat with the autologous fat grafting procedure.
