Lower Blood Pressure Naturally

It is estimated by the CDC that one in three American adults have high blood pressure (HBP). This is important as having high blood pressure increases the risk for heart disease and stroke; the first and third leading cause of death in the United States. Luckily, acupuncture has been shown effective in both lowering and regulating blood pressure, so with acupuncture you can lower your blood pressure naturally.

One of the ways in which acupuncture helps lower blood pressure naturally is that it helps to induce relaxation, which then relieves the stress that is often at the root of the condition. Said differently, acupuncture has been shown to exert a homeostatic regulation of blood pressure by reducing both systolic and diastolic pressures.

The insertion of the thin, filiform acupuncture needles into specific points on the body helps to stimulate the autonomic nervous system and turn-off the sympathetic (fight or flight) response. It is these two systems that are responsible for regulating blood pressure.

Acupuncture is also helpful lowering blood pressure naturally in that It increases the antioxidant capacity of the body, helps with heart and lung capacity and functioning, reduces local and systemic inflammation, and increases metabolic functioning of the body – all in addition to inducing the relaxation response. It should be noted that the above are not only important for those with HBP, but also for those suffering from other conditions – such as hypertension or other cardiovascular disease, diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

The natural homeostatic properties of acupuncture are also helpful in that it does not produce adverse reactions. Some high blood pressure medications have been shown to produce an accelerated decrease in blood pressure, known as hypotension. The more controlled reduction of blood pressure via acupuncture can help prevent adverse reactions like dizziness or fainting from hypotension.

Acupuncture can also minimize the dizziness and weakness that some have with hypertension or HBP.  Acupuncture has also been shown helpful in the management of heart pain or palpitations that sometimes occur with high blood pressure.

In total, acupuncture can safely lower and regulate blood pressure naturally. This leads to a decrease in the number of anti-hypertensive pharmacological treatments needed and a reduction in medication dosage if one is using prescription medications for their HBP. Acupuncture also has fewer side effects.

If you or someone you know has high blood pressure, consider the use of acupuncture to help safely lower and control the elevated blood pressure.
