Acupuncture and Stress
We’ve all heard the saying, “Change is good.” In the world of acupuncture, we are more likely to say change is inevitable. And it usually creates stress, regardless of whether we think it’s good or bad.
Whenever we are faced with something different, our entire being must make an adjustment. Many react by creating stress hormones that depress the mood, metabolism, digestion, sleep, and general ability to heal. This is called fight-or-flight mode, a state of inflammation also known as “stress.” When stress is experienced over a period of time, we become less resilient, more fatigued, and more vulnerable to illness and disease.
Acupuncture has been clinically proven to support bringing the body and mind out of fight-or-flight and can help us shift into warm-fuzzy mode. The result is fewer stress hormones in the body and a state of relaxation during and after treatment. This is how it can lower inflammation throughout the body. Warm-fuzzy mode allows us to experience a sense of ease, increase energy, and improve our immune system.
It’s for this reason many people come to their treatment feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and/or irritable and leave feeling much more relaxed and in less pain. Furthermore, this feeling tends to last longer as time goes by, with regular treatment. It’s the same as exercise and meditation; the more regularly it’s done, the greater the benefits.
The world today is changing rapidly. Some changes are great, such as cars that park themselves. Other changes are not so great, such as the rising cost of health insurance. Acupuncture can be extremely helpful in riding the tide of change.
