How Acupuncture Supports Women’s Health
PART 1
Menopause, Menstrual Health, Fertility and Pelvic Pain
Women rarely come to the clinic with only one concern. Hot flashes may accompany restless sleep, while menstrual pain may travel into the back or leg. Hormonal changes can also affect energy, mood, digestion, and overall well-being.
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) looks at how these symptoms connect and personalizes treatment around each woman’s overall pattern.
A Whole-Person Approach
A women’s health visit may include questions about the menstrual cycle, pain, sleep, digestion, emotions, pregnancies, and medical history. Pulse and tongue findings may also guide the traditional assessment.
Treatment may focus on regulating qi and blood, clearing heat, nourishing deficiencies, and supporting the Liver, Spleen, Kidney, Chong Mai, and Ren Mai systems. These are TCM concepts—not biomedical organ diagnoses—and acupuncture does not replace appropriate medical care.
Hot Flashes and Night Sweats
In TCM, menopausal hot flashes and night sweats are often associated with yin deficiency. When the body’s cooling and nourishing qualities become insufficient, flushing, sweating, restlessness, and nighttime waking may occur.
Acupuncture may be used to nourish yin, calm the mind, and support restful sleep and a steadier internal rhythm.
Painful or Irregular Periods
Cramps, clotting, delayed periods, irritability, and breast tenderness may be described in TCM as Liver qi stagnation or blood stasis. When cold is present, menstrual pain may improve with warmth.
Acupuncture may be timed around the menstrual cycle to support circulation, ease tension, and reduce discomfort. Severe pain, heavy bleeding, or sudden changes in the menstrual cycle should always be medically evaluated.
Menstrual Pain With Sciatica
Some women experience lower-back pain or sciatica that becomes worse before or during menstruation. TCM may view the pelvic, back, and leg symptoms as part of one connected pattern.
Treatment may combine local acupuncture points with points traditionally used to improve circulation through the lower abdomen and pelvis.
Fertility and Cycle Support
TCM connects reproductive health with the Kidney system and the Chong and Ren vessels. Treatment may follow different phases of the menstrual cycle while also addressing stress, sleep, and emotional tension.
Acupuncture does not guarantee pregnancy or replace fertility treatment, but it may be incorporated alongside care from a gynecologist or reproductive endocrinologist.
Because every woman’s symptoms and health history are different, acupuncture treatment should always be individualized.
