The Many Benefits of Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a specialized massage technique that aims to decongest tissues affected by a sluggish lymphatic system due to surgery, illness, infection, or congenital abnormalities.  As the lymphatic system is part of the immune system, this technique is supportive to individuals with auto-immune conditions and is also detoxifying. The lymphatic system is comprised of a network of vessels, lymph nodes, lymphatic fluid, and supporting organs and glands such as the thymus gland, tonsils and adenoids, spleen, bone marrow, and mucosa-associated tissue that protect against infection.

This technique was developed in the 1930’s by Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife Estrid, and they went on to establish the renowned Dr. Vodder School that trains therapists throughout the world.  Originally this technique was largely used to treat post-surgical swelling, particularly after lymph nodes were removed for cancer treatment, and for individuals suffering from lymphedema or lipedema.  More people are becoming aware of the benefits of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), however, and employing it for a range of symptom-relief and health benefits.

While some of the indications to receive this therapy are quite specific, the detoxifying nature of this therapy applies to many people wishing to simply maintain good health.  The word “drainage” often has clients believing it will be an intense session, but the very opposite is true. The lymphatic vessels are close to the surface so the technique and level of pressure must be light and rhythmic to encourage the flow of lymph.  This rhythmic movement is very relaxing to the central nervous system and therefore anyone suffering from stress, depression, or anxiety will benefit from this technique.  A session typically begins at the neck and chest and guides the lymph fluid towards the major lymph node collection sites in the neck, axillary, and groin regions.  Drinking a lot of fluids after a session is important, as well as gentle movement to encourage the flow of the lymphatic fluid.

Auto-immune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis are increasingly prevalent in the United States and are often difficult to treat effectively.  Manual lymphatic drainage is one technique that can help individuals suffering from these conditions as it encourages a healthy immune response, clears stagnant lymphatic fluid from the tissues, has an analgesic effect, and is calming to the central nervous system.

Other conditions that MLD can help with include migraines, recovery from infection, wound healing, and post-surgical swelling or sluggishness.  MLD also improves the health, appearance and texture of the skin so conditions such as acne and cellulite may benefit from regular treatments.

There are a few conditions in which MLD is not indicated: congestive heart failure, untreated hypertension, renal failure, blood clots, and acute infections.
