Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia Experience Life Without Pain
For those suffering from fibromyalgia, pain can be disabling, and daily life can be a painful struggle. Even the most enjoyable activities can be difficult to partake in when movement or touch brings forth pain and discomfort.
What Is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by constant widespread dull ache/pain and tenderness that has lasted for at least three months, accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Women are more likely to develop fibromyalgia than are men.
Why Does It Hurt?
Experts do not know what the causes of fibromyalgia. Theories include disturbance in pain sensation and amplification of signals affecting the brain’s way of processing pain signals. The brain’s pain receptors develop a memory of pain, and become more sensitive, meaning they can overreact to pain signals.
Symptoms Of Fibromyalgia
Symptoms include, deep muscle pain, soreness with sensitivity to touch, morning stiffness, flu-like aching radiating pain, tension headaches, problem sleeping, fatigue, difficulty thinking clearly (also known as “fibro fog”), irritable bowel, lower abdominal pain or cramping. Fibromyalgia sufferers may experience anxiety, depression and sleep disorders, as well.
Pain shows up after exposure to sudden physical trauma, surgery, infection, or significant psychological stress. In other cases symptoms gradually accumulate over time with no single triggering event. It’s extremely common for patients to feel depressed, helpless, hopeless, and out of options when short-term remedies fail to provide pain relief.
How Can You Get Help?
A doctor with many years of clinical experience treating difficult cases, who understands the complexities of pain, and ineffectiveness of traditional treatment, can be the best bet. The doctor will address pain as a universal problem using the whole person approach, addressing (physical, biochemical, mental, and emotional aspects of the human being), and treating the underlying causes of the problem.
After performing a detailed medical case history, physical, orthopedic, and neurological examination/evaluation, review radiological images (x-rays, MRI, scans), and blood tests, they will set up a treatment plan tailored to individual needs to alleviate pain, and will modify treatment according to body responses to treatment.
