Mary Nalls is the owner and director of Back in Motion Physical Therapy PLC. She graduated in 1985 from Northeastern University in Boston Massachusetts. She received a Bachelors of Science degree in Education with a Minor in Sports Medicine-Athletic Training and Cardiovascular Health and Exercise. In 1988, she earned a Master’s degree in Physical Therapy at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, PA.

Mary’s was first employed as a physical therapist at National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington DC. The patient population served at this facility was patients suffering post stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, limb amputations and post traumatic orthopedic injuries.

For the next 10 years, Mary worked for Inova Outpatient Physical Therapy Center and Fairfax Physical Therapy Services. She practiced physical therapy at a number of their hospitals and outpatient clinics in Northern Virginia. She worked primarily treating orthopedic and sports medicine conditions. During her time at Inova Health System, Mary developed and directed their first Women’s Health Physical Therapy Program. She trained their physical therapists in the unique treatment of women’s health dysfunctions as well as lectured to the physicians employed at their local hospitals.

Mary is the co-author of the American Physical Therapy Associations Women’s Health Manual. The manual was written by a group of women’s health physical therapists with the goal of guiding other physical therapists on the standards of proper physical therapy evaluation and treatment techniques for many women’s health conditions.

In September 2002, Mary achieved her long term goal of exclusively providing one-on-one physical therapy care by opening Back in Motion Physical Therapy PLC in the basement of her home. Since then Back in Motion Physical Therapy has grown to two independent practices located in Lorton and Alexandria, VA. Presently Mary practices alongside seventeen highly respected licensed physical therapists. Mary credits the steady growth of Back in Motion Physical Therapy to the dedication and skill level of her staff physical therapists and professional office administration staff.

Over the past 3 years, Mary has taken many post graduate courses in Vestibular Rehabilitation. She recently received certification from Emory University’s Competency Based Course. She is passionate about properly evaluating and treating patients with vestibular dysfunction and fall prevention. She utilizes Video Frenzel goggles to video tape patients abnormal eye movements (nystagmus) to properly diagnose and treat these frequently misunderstood conditions. Vestibular diagnoses she regular treats includes: benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, (BPPV), vestibular hypo-function, vestibular migraine, post surgical anterior canal dehiscence and acoustic neuroma. Mary enjoys treating patients of all ages, with new and chronic disorders. She predominantly treats patients suffering from vestibular disorders (her passion) and pelvic floor conditions but she also treats orthopedic and sports injuries, post surgical conditions and back pain. Her treatment approach encompasses a variety of manual therapy techniques, dry needling, therapeutic exercises geared toward restoration of muscle function and balance. Mary utilizes her patient’s personal goals to guide her functional approach to their plan of care.

Mary Nalls has been married to George Nalls for over 25 years. They have four boys between the ages of 12 and 24 years. During her free time Mary likes to bike, play tennis and hike. She enjoys spending time with her family and watching her children compete in a variety of sporting events.
