I Feel Fine, Why Should I See a Doctor?

Majority of us will face some kind of health issues sometime in our lifetime. That is a fact. “I feel and look fine and I have no symptoms, so I must be healthy”. That may be a myth. Let us take the most common health issue, high blood pressure. Almost 99% of the patients with high blood pressure have no symptoms at all for a very long time. The first symptom may be a stroke, a heart attack or a catastrophic bleeding in the brain leading to a lifetime disability or even death over a short period of time. That is why high blood pressure is called a “silent” killer.

“I feel fine, why should I see a doctor?” Of course health care is expensive. But you would not do it with your car or truck even if they are running fine. Well if the transmission or engine dies you can get a replacement but there is no replacement for a dead muscle in your heart (after a myocardial infarction, also known as heart attack) or dead brain cells (after a stroke, also known as a brain attack). Prevention is necessary.

There are many more myths many people believe e.g. “I hardly eat any sugar and I am a vegetarian, I am not overweight, I should be healthy”, “Only the people who eat lots of sugar get diabetes” or “My high blood pressure will go away if I exercise, lose weight and eat less salt and I wouldn't have to keep taking medications,” etc.

There are many complex factors responsible for disease processes such as genetics, lifestyle, diet and many unknowns where the science and medicine is looking for answers. There are many other areas where your participation and compliance can make a huge difference. As far as your health is concerned, the choice is yours.
