Laser Dental Treatments

Finally there is good news for the millions of Americans who suffer from some form of gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis). Fear of periodontal disease treatment vanishes when patients find out no scalpel nor sutures are needed. Through the use of the Lares PowerLase AT laser, dentists can treat moderate to severe gum disease right in the office. Patients heal naturally with less bleeding and discomfort, usually returning to their daily routines with little disruption. Gingivitis and periodontitis are prevalent among 58% of the adult population. Gingivitis is an inflammation of gum tissue that develops as toxins and bacteria irritate the gums. This inflammation makes the tissues red, swollen and likely to bleed easily.

Left untreated, gingivitis can often progress to periodontal disease which results in inflammation within the supporting tissues of the teeth. Patients experience progressive loss of tissue attachment and the bone that holds teeth in place. Periodontitis is responsible for more tooth loss than tooth decay in the United States.

The PowerLase laser works by using a small amount of light energy directed through a tiny fiber, which is gently placed between the gum and tooth. This light energy removes a tiny amount of diseased tissue and aids in reducing bacteria associated with gum disease. After the area is thoroughly cleaned, the body can heal naturally. Although the procedure itself can be virtually pain free, the area may be anesthetized for the patient's comfort. Initial treatment focuses on scaling and the use of small instruments to remove tartar. The laser portion of the treatment is then performed and normally only takes a few minutes. Depending upon the severity of the patient's periodontal disease, treatment may be accomplished in one office visit or in multiple visits.

This technology now gives dentists a gentle and effective way to treat gum disease, promoting a healthier smile and body to last a lifetime.
