Battling Wrinkles

Everyone will develop wrinkles. It is a basic part of the skin's aging process.

As we get older, the body's ability to make collagen slows. And with less collagen, the skin loses resilience. In addition, with age the skin has less ability to stay moisturized. By our 40s and 50s, most people will see fine lines and wrinkles.

The good news is that you can take steps to delay the onset of wrinkles as well as treat wrinkles when they do develop.

Simple steps to help prevent wrinkles include reducing exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays this includes natural sunlight as well as tanning beds. Daily use of sunscreen, especially on the face, can dramatically reduce the appearance of wrinkles as well as help prevent skin cancer.

Not smoking also helps keep our skin smooth. People who smoke accelerate the aging of their skin. And, the repeat puckering to inhale causes deep lines around the lips.

Treating Wrinkles

Moisturizers developed especially for the face help plump up fine lines, which make them less noticeable. Also, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends gently washing your face every night and then applying a product that contains retinol, which has been shown to help stimulate the skin to make collagen.

At-home products generally contain less-potent ingredients, but improper use can cause problems. As such, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends that if you have questions about how to use an at-home product or concerns about the safety of a product that you talk with a dermatologist before trying the product.

A balanced diet with vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean protein also lead to healthier skin.

When at-home treatments and lifestyle changes are not enough to treat your wrinkles, there are many safe and effective professional options.

A dermatologist can evaluate your skin and recommend proven prescription-strength and medical-grade wrinkle creams, serums and lotions to help with fine wrinkles.

For stubborn fine wrinkles and deeper wrinkles, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and various laser treatments can be used to help rejuvenate the skin.

Your doctor might also recommend injectable treatments such as fillers and Botulinum-based treatments. Fillers, such as Juvederm, are just as they are described; various natural or safe artificial substances are injected under the skin to “fill in” the wrinkle.

Botulinum-based treatments, such as Botox and Xeomin, reduce muscle movement in key areas of the face that contributes to deep wrinkles in locations like the forehead and between the eyes.
