Reducing the Risk Of Falling
It's no secret that as we age, our fall risks increase, which can lead to moderate to severe injuries. This is especially true for those who are over 65.
All too often, we hear stories from family members or caregivers who find themselves struggling to keep their loved ones safe.
Here are some startling statistics according to Genesis Rehabilitation Services, 33 percent of people over 65 have experienced one or more falls each year and of that, 50 percent are unable to get up unassisted.
Seventy percent of falls occur in people's own homes, as this is where they spend most of their time. There are many factors contributing to falls. Lori Sealy, LPTA/PM of Genesis states that “Some of the more common factors for falls in seniors include posture, variations in blood pressure, improper medication dosages, visual impairment and footwear.”
So here are some fall prevention tips that you, a loved one, family, friend or neighbor can use in order to reduce the risk of falling
Know how to get up if you have a fall. Talk with your family members or therapist to choose the safest way to get up from the floor.
Review your medications with your doctors or pharmacist if you experience dizziness or balance problems.
Wear closed toe low-heeled shoes. Slippers or shoes with smooth bottoms often lead to sipping, tripping for falling.
Lastly, know your limitations. Never attempt to do something if you are unsure about doing it alone.
