Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon is the large tendon that connects the heel bone (calcaneus) to the muscles in the back of the calf. Achilles tendonitis is a painful condition that occurs when the Achilles tendon becomes inflamed.

Signs and Symptoms Present with Achilles Tendonitis

Mild swelling along the tendon.

Tenderness/soreness over the course of the Achilles tendon.

Pain when rising on your toes or pushing off with walking.

Causes of Achilles Tendonitis

Sudden increase in repetitive activity.

An overuse injury with the start of a new exercise regimen.

Flat feet/flattening of the arch. This can lead to pronation resulting in extra stress on the Achilles tendon. With pronation, it is important to wear proper supportive shoegear with orthotics.

Inadequate flexibility and strength of the calf muscles.

If you experience sudden pain and swelling near your heel and the inability to bend your foot down, you may have ruptured your Achilles tendon.

Another sign is that you may not be able to rise up on your toes. See your doctor immediately for this condition.

When experiencing pain in the Achilles tendon, it is important to see your doctor to have a thorough diagnosis and treatment plan.
