Is A Men’s Hair System The Right Choice To Cover My Hair-Loss?
Hair loss is a journey that most guys face, at some point in their life, but it doesn’t have to define who we are. Like most men, a gust of wind or wet hair has left the corners of my scalp showing, letting me know that it won’t be long until a full receding hairline is upon me. If you’re like me, you’ve tried to ignore it and just put it down to your hair being in a bad position or the product you’re using not working. But the trust with hair-loss is that it’s best to tackle it sooner rather than later. If you’re one of those people, like myself, who hasn’t tackled it early enough and is now essentially bald, you’re left with fewer routes to a full head of hair. One solution that caught my attention was men’s hair systems. These are a modern approach of a toupee, often referred to as realistic wigs for men or men glue-on wigs. These systems are a great way at having a luscious head of hair, without the invasive procedure of a transplant. But is this the right choice for you?
What Exactly Is a Men’s Hair System?
I first saw a men’s hair system on Instagram and I’ll admit I was sceptical. In the video, the barber had essentially glued what looked like a wig to a mans head. So I did some digging into what I saw, to get answers… Was it just another term for a wig? Would it look fake or unnatural? And after some more digging on Instagram and treatment canters, I realised that it was much more advanced than a standard glue job.
A men’s hair system is a non-surgical solution designed to cover areas of hair loss. Unlike traditional wigs, they’re tailored specifically to fit your scalp and blend with your natural hair (if applied properly, you’d never know the difference between a hair system and natural hair). Think of them as the best wigs for men who want a realistic, undetectable finish. Whether you opt for a full system or a partial one, the goal is to create a look so natural that even your closest friends won’t suspect a thing, as long as you don’t go swimming with them.
Not only is it non-invasive, but I was also impressed on the customisability that comes with these systems. From hair density to colour matching, everything is tailored to suit your preferences (which isn’t the case with transplanting). Plus, with options like men glue-on wigs, you can achieve a secure fit that lasts through daily activities (you won’t have to give up theme parks). It’s not just about covering up; it’s about creating a version of yourself that feels authentic.
Can women use a hair system?
Whilst this article focuses on men’s hair systems, it’s only fair to explore the option for our women readers. To best answer this, I’ve enlisted the help of Julia North, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Wigonia, luxury wig brand. She says “of course women can use a hair system, although it is more common for women to just use a human-hair women’s-style wig instead. This is because the wig market is more focused towards women, so there’s more option. But this doesn’t mean women can’t use a hair system, and something that you’re best to explore with your hairstylist and see if they offer installation of these units.
Why Should I Consider a Hair System Over Other Options?
If you’re anything like me, hair loss is not something you want to deal with forever, so you’ve probably explored multiple solutions. Maybe you’ve investigated medications like minoxidil and finasteride, shampoos, or even surgical procedures. So why choose a hair system? My reasoning boiled down to cost, customisability and the fact I couldn’t get a transplant due to my scalp not having enough viable follicles.
Let’s talk about cost. Surgical hair restoration can be incredibly expensive, and there’s no guarantee it will work for everyone. Most people go to Turkey to get this procedure done, as it’s cheaper, but it’s still a risk that it won’t work. On the other hand, realistic wigs for men provide an affordable alternative that delivers immediate results. There’s no waiting period, no recovery time—just instant transformation.
Convenience was another major selling point for me. With a men’s hair system, I didn’t have to commit to a lifetime of pills or treatments, which sometimes have bad side-effects. Instead, I could simply apply the system and go about my day. And thanks to advancements in technology, these systems are breathable, lightweight, and comfortable to wear.
Lastly, the results speak for themselves. I’ve seen guys transform their appearance overnight, going from self-conscious to self-assured. The best wigs for men are indistinguishable from natural hair, giving you the freedom to style and live your life without a fuss.
How Do I Choose the Best Wig for Me?
With so many options on the market, finding the best wigs for men can feel like buying a new pair of shoes. I know it did for me. But once I started trying them on and trying to match them to my natural hair (when I had it), the process became much easier.
Start by considering your specific needs. Are you dealing with complete baldness or just thinning in certain areas? This will determine whether you need a full system or a partial one. Now do you want something that matches your current style, or are you ready for a change? Customisation options like hair texture, length, and colour make it easy to achieve your ideal vibe.
I also recommend consulting with a professional. Many companies offer consultations where you can discuss your goals and get personalized recommendations. Trust me, having an expert guide you through the process makes all the difference. It doesn’t hurt to look online at men’s hairstyles for some inspiration.
What Are the Downsides of a Hair System?
While I’m a big advocate for hair systems, I believe in being honest about the potential downsides. After all, no solution is perfect, and it’s important to weigh the pros and cons before deciding.
The biggest downside is that many people will already know you have hair loss. So once people see you with a luscious head of hair, questions will start to arise that might make you uncomfortable.
Another factor is maintenance. While upkeep is relatively straightforward, it does require some commitment. Regular cleaning, adhesive reapplication, and occasional replacements are part of the deal. For me, the trade-off was well worth it, but it’s something to keep in mind. Check out some of the glues which are used to stick these hair systems down.
Am I Ready to Take the Leap?
Ultimately, the decision to try a men’s hair system comes down to personal preference. For me, it was about more than just covering my hair loss—it was about regaining my confidence and feeling like myself again. If you’re tired of hiding under hats or avoiding mirrors, this could be the solution you’ve been searching for.
