What Can Different Types of CT Scans Detect? A Patient Guide
Has your doctor sent you for a CT scan? It’s normal to have a few questions. What does it actually show? Why a CT and not an ultrasound or MRI? And what happens once the results are in? CT scans (short for computed tomography) are one of the most common tests used by doctors across Australia, and once you know what each type is looking for, the whole thing feels a lot less scary.
How Does a CT Scan Work?
Think of a CT scan as a super-detailed X-ray. Instead of one flat picture, the machine takes lots of X-ray images from different angles as it moves around you, and a computer joins them together into clear, sliced-up pictures of the inside of your body. This lets your doctor see bones, organs, and blood vessels in a lot more detail than a normal X-ray.
Most scans only take 10 to 30 minutes. For some scans, you’ll be given a special dye called contrast, either through a drip or to drink, which helps certain organs or blood vessels show up more clearly on the images.
In Australia, you’ll need a referral from your GP or specialist before you can book a CT scan. The good news is that many CT scans are covered, at least partly, by Medicare. Whether you pay anything out of your own pocket depends on the type of scan, whether contrast is needed, and whether the clinic bulk bills, so it’s worth asking when you book.
Head and Brain CT
A CT scan of the head is often the first test doctors order after a fall, a car accident, or a sudden, severe headache, because it’s quick and can show bleeding, swelling, or a fracture straight away. It’s also commonly used to check for signs of stroke, look into ongoing headaches, or find tumours or other changes in the brain and skull.
Chest CT
A chest CT gives a much clearer view of your lungs, heart, airways, and nearby lymph nodes than a standard chest X-ray. Doctors often order one for a cough that won’t go away, unexplained chest pain, or shortness of breath. It can pick up things like pneumonia, small lung nodules, blood clots in the lungs, emphysema, and lung cancer, and it’s also used to keep an eye on lung conditions over time.
Abdominal CT
An abdominal CT looks at organs in the abdomen, including the liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, and gallbladder. It can help investigate unexplained abdominal pain and may detect kidney stones, pancreatitis, infections, masses, and other abnormalities. Gallstones are often assessed with ultrasound, although CT may identify some stones or related complications.
CT Pelvis
A CT pelvis scan looks at your lower belly area, including the bladder, reproductive organs, lower bowel, and the bones and tissue around the hips. Doctors often order it alongside an abdominal CT (sometimes called a “CT abdomen and pelvis”) to figure out the cause of pelvic pain, or to check for appendicitis, diverticulitis, bowel inflammation, or infection. A CT pelvis scan is also good at picking up kidney and bladder stones, lumps or masses in the pelvis, and it helps doctors check whether cancers of the bladder, ovaries, prostate, or bowel have spread. Cardiac CT and CT Angiogram
A CT angiogram uses contrast dye to get a clear picture of your blood vessels, which helps doctors spot blockages, weak spots (aneurysms), or narrowing in arteries anywhere in the body, including the ones feeding your heart. A cardiac CT can also check for calcium build-up and plaque around the heart, giving doctors a good idea of your heart disease risk without needing a more invasive test.
Spine and Bone/Joint CT
CT scans of the spine, joints, and limbs are handy for looking at complicated fractures, wear-and-tear conditions, and bone tumours, especially when a regular X-ray hasn’t given a clear enough answer. They’re also often used to plan surgery, since the detailed 3D picture helps surgeons understand the exact shape of the bone beforehand.
Is a CT Scan Safe?
CT scans use more radiation than a regular X-ray, so your doctor will only send you for one when the benefits outweigh the risks. Radiology clinics in Australia follow strict safety rules to keep radiation as low as possible, and scans are usually avoided during pregnancy unless there’s a real need. If you’re given contrast dye, there’s a small chance of an allergic reaction, so make sure to tell your provider about any allergies or kidney problems beforehand.
Getting the Right Scan for You
The type of CT scan you’re sent for depends entirely on what your doctor is trying to find, so don’t worry if your scan looks different from someone else’s. If you’ve got one coming up, it’s perfectly fine to ask your GP or the radiology clinic what they’re checking for and whether you’ll need contrast, so you know what to expect on the day. With a valid referral, many CT scans may attract a Medicare benefit, although out-of-pocket costs depend on the service and provider. CT remains a commonly used way to investigate many conditions when your doctor considers it appropriate.
