External Methods Of Purification

New Year's resolutions involve a great deal of willpower, such as losing weight or quitting smoking. Habits such as these also have the tendency to release toxins stored in the tissues. As unhealthy cells are shed, supportive measures such as herbs, a healthy diet, and massage can alleviate the unpleasant period of transition. One can support efforts of detoxification with dry brushing, exfoliation, and purifying baths.

Dry brushing involves the use of a soft bristled brush on the skin to stimulate blood flow and eliminate toxins through the skin. The strokes used should be vigorous to get the blood flowing. A warm glow will ensure the proper technique, and the skin should redden with the effort. This is an effective method for reducing small areas of cellulite when done regularly and combined with essential oils that have an astringent nature, such as the citrus oils. Following this, a massage with good quality oils will enhance the effectiveness.

Other methods of exfoliation can be used for detoxification, and also to improve the health of the skin. Salt scrubs using fine sea salt combined with a little carrier oil such as sesame or grapeseed, are a very invigorating way to start the day. This method obviously requires a shower afterward, using lukewarm water as the skin may be sensitive. Sugar scrubs are less drawing and detoxifying, but are a wonderful treatment for the skin, and suitable for sensitive skin. Salt scrubs should not be used unless one is in generally good health and has no broken or thin skin.

Seaweed powders and sea salts are good additions to the bath to help draw impurities to the surface. Seaweed powders are particularly helpful with weight loss as they have a mild stimulating effect on the thyroid. Essential oils that assist with detoxification include juniper, eucalyptus, rosemary, thyme, and all the citrus oils. Citrus oils can be irritating in hot water though, so save them for the other methods. Therapeutic baths also help ease soreness in the muscles that can occur when one is starting a new exercise program, or ease the anxiety that comes with quitting bad habits.
