New Advances In Gynecologic Surgery
Years ago, women did not have the option of minimally invasive surgery which offers many advantages over the traditional open surgery. Undergoing gynecologic surgery meant spending several days in the hospital and being away from work for at least six weeks. For this reason, many chose to suffer from their medical condition rather than endure the painful and long recovery.
With the introduction of standard laparoscopy in the 1980's more and more gynecologists were offering their patients the minimally invasive option to perform surgery for treatment of fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and other conditions.
Today, minimally invasive surgery continues to evolve. Advanced laparoscopic surgeons who are experts in the field of minimally invasive surgery are able to treat all benign and most malignant conditions using small incisions. The more basic standard laparoscopy is replaced by advanced laparoscopy with more sophisticated techniques that overcome the limitations of the traditional surgery. There are several different procedures that are being offered today and it is important for women to understand their differences, advantages, and disadvantages.
DualPort Gyn surgery is one of the latest and most complex advanced laparoscopic procedure with clear advantages over other minimally invasive procedures such as robotics and single site. Although robotic surgery is highly marketed and is better than open surgery, it has many disadvantages such as larger and more incisions even when compared to traditional standard laparoscopy. Patients undergoing robotic surgery also spend more time under general anesthesia, which poses additional risks. To date, many studies have shown clear disadvantages of the robot as compared to standard laparoscopy in gynecologic surgery. The single site surgery, although appealing due to only one incision, is limited to simple hysterectomies and removal of small cysts. In addition, the location and a relatively large size of the single site incision can lead to more pain and umbilical hernia formation. DualPort surgery offers the smallest incisions and fastest recovery of all the minimally invasive procedures with dramatically shorter operating time. Performed by highly trained surgeons, DualPort surgery can be used to remove massive fibroids and ovarian cysts, and treat severe cases of endometriosis.
We have come a long way in being able to offer more surgical options to women. In more cases than ever, patients are good candidates for minimally invasive procedures and more doctors are receiving training to be able to offer these alternatives. Our goal is to train more gynecologists to perform DualPort surgery, so women everywhere will have access to this procedure.
