Home Dental Remedies

Patients sometimes share their “secrets” of how they keep their teeth bright and clean. Sometimes it seems like they might be on to something, but then when you start to ask questions the “secrets” can actually be quite concerning. Home remedies, whether it was passed down by your Nanna or it was found on Google, are a double-edged sword.

For example, scrubbing your teeth with baking soda will remove stains. It will also remove gums and enamel. It's more complicated to regenerate lost gum tissue and tooth structure than to remove stains in a safer manner. “…But my Nanna did it all the time.” You are not your Nanna. Another one is that lemon juice kills germs. Yes it does, and it will also weaken the enamel leaving an otherwise healthy individual with weak, sensitive teeth. How about warm salt water for a gum infection? Well that solution is tried and true it does help reduce the swelling in the mouth. Just know that if you don't address the source of the problem it can get much worse, even life threatening. So please see a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment of any swelling or infection.

In general, vitamins like Vitamin E and plant extracts like aloe and coconut oil are very helpful in keeping gums healthy. They are used in many holistic products. What they cannot do is replace the definitive results of a professional cleaning. They as any other product are to help maintain the dentition not replace professional care. Tartar and calculus are safely removed by your hygienist, and what you do at home to prevent recurrence does matter.

“If you want it done right do it yourself.” In some cases that's true. When it comes to our health it may be better to get that second opinion. Although it may consume a bit of time up front the problems prevented by seeing a professional is priceless.
