Sinuses and Acupuncture

The weather has changed once again. With cooler and damp weather, many people come down with clogged and/or painful sinuses. This time of year, there is a steady stream of people with post-nasal drip, running noses, and sneezing (no pun intended). Fortunately for them, acupuncture may help address these concerns.

Space is what allows us to do the majority of our information gathering. And the head is full of open spaces that allow us to speak, sing, smell, taste, and hear. The ears must be clear to hear, the sinuses must be open to smell and taste (and sing). And when we are congested or if the air around us gets too dry, our eyes can get watery or dry, making vision blurry or light sensitive. It is amazing how a little thing like air quality can change 90% of how we perceive our world. There are many acupoints to open the sinuses (provided there isn't a physical blockage such as a deviated septum).

Besides making an appointment to see your acupuncturist, you can do many things for your sinuses. One of the favorites is the nasal rinse, or neti pot. This is a great way to keep the sinuses moist and open. This can be a big help, especially if you suffer from allergies, a head cold, or otherwise dry or clogged sinuses. Another strategy is to use a humidifier when the air in your house gets dry from forced heat. Also, having your heating ducts cleaned may help. Additionally, many people use steamers to remove dust mites, molds, viruses, and bacteria from their carpets, beds, and curtains. Finally, having the house checked and treated for mold is imperative for those with asthma and/or allergies.

In the big picture, this time of year is a season of transition. The leaves are falling from the trees, some animals are preparing for hibernation, and we can't help but feel this shift. Anytime we are faced with change, our edges will show up. And head colds are just one of the ways we experience the ups and downs of life. Acupuncture is a great way to find the balance as we navigate the changes in life.
