How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture treatments focus on the cultivation of the body’s vital energy, referred to as Qi, and the manipulation of this energy to facilitate healing, achieve balance, and sustain wellness. The National Institute of Health asserts that considerable evidence exists to show that acupuncture alters immune function, alters neurotransmitters, which affect mood and regulatory functions, and releases endorphins, in addition to a plethora of additional beneficial effects.

Lifestyle habits, psychological conditioning, environmental elements, and poor nutritional support can render the body incapable of properly diagnosing, addressing, and reversing the effects of our daily choices.

In Eastern Medicine, there is an importance placed on the notion that the symptoms and subjective experience of the patient are often manifestations of an internal imbalance that may have existed long before the patient became consciously aware of any external discomfort.

By focusing on the larger picture, and treating the root cause rather than the symptoms manifesting, Eastern Medicine successfully addresses the patient’s chief complaint as well as any additional concerns that may appear unrelated.

In order to do so, a licensed acupuncturist will have an in depth consultation with the patient to inquire about their chief complaint, past medical history, lifestyle habits, emotional and psychological health, and nutritional preferences to build an overall picture of the patient. The acupuncturist will combine this gathered information with their visual observation of the patient (gait, complexion, posture, weight distribution, vitality), and the results of their physical exam (texture and tone of skin, any evident nodes or nodules, any observed pain or relief of pain upon palpation) in order to establish a pattern of disharmony. This pattern is often referred to as the root cause.

By determining the root cause of the chief complaint, the acupuncturist may uncover seemingly unrelated discomforts that in fact can all be attributed to the same root cause. For example, the low-pitched ringing of the ears, frequent night-time urination and discomfort of the lower back may be results of the same root cause. Similarly, the headaches, chest oppression, and easily angered temperament of the patient may be manifestations of the same root cause. By uncovering and addressing this root cause, acupuncture can simultaneously address these troublesome symptoms.

This holistic approach establishes an understanding that the body is a complex and intricate network of systems, functions, and processes that are interrelated and when in proper balance render the patient full of energy; free of aches, pains, and stiffness; emotionally and psychologically sound, and yielding a resilient immune system.
