Fear Stopping You From Going To the Dentist?

Rather do just about anything than go to the dentist? Even when you are suffering from a major dental issue? You’re not alone. When surveyed, as many as 80% of adults admitted some level of anxiety around dental work. Nearly 50% reported that their fear has kept them from seeking dental care. Approximately 10% of adults are true “dental phobics” who completely avoid the dentist.
Why the Anxiety?
According to the Journal of American Dental Association the most prevalent reasons are fear of pain, fear of needles, drills, gagging, feelings of helplessness and loss of control, ineffectiveness of medication in providing pain relief, and fears caused by the “horror stories” of others.
For many people, even making a dental appointment can result in increased stress levels. During an actual visit, anxiety levels for many people can be so great that they experience hyperventilation, dizziness, and nervousness.
For true phobics, the mere idea of a visit to the dentist can leave them genuinely panic-stricken.
The High Cost Of Dental Fear
No one likes going to the dentist even if they don’t suffer from fear of dentists or needles, but it’s a necessary part of staying healthy. Not getting regular dental care is associated with higher rates of gum disease, tooth decay and loss, and lingering halitosis.
Research now shows that a lack of dental care is also linked to much more serious issues including heart disease, stroke and even diabetes. In addition to the physical pain and suffering associated with these issues, those with dental anxiety and phobias often experience emotional issues such as low self-esteem and shame for being too afraid to seek needed dental treatment.
Overcoming Fear Of Dentists
and Needles
One of the most effective and lasting ways to get over any phobia, including dentists and needles, is hypnosis. It allows people to get to the root of their fear at the sub-conscious level and replace it with beneficial thoughts and behaviors. Analysis of research on the use of hypnosis in addressing dental anxiety showed that 75% of the subjects experienced a reduction in pain and anxiety.
Hypnosis is now recommended by the American Psychological Association (APA) as a powerful and effective therapeutic technique for a wide range of conditions, including the pain and anxiety associated with dental visits.
Medical and dental associations have begun recommending that their members get trained in hypnotherapy to help their patients deal with their fear of pain and needles.
One prominent dental college, USC School of Dentistry, has even begun teaching hypnosis as an alternative to needles and Novocain.
Hypnosis can help you, too.
