Aromatherapy Holistic Health and Relief

March is a great time to make changes as we transition into spring; a season often affiliated with renewal and new life. How about making a change for the better by trying something new that aims at balancing your entire self mind, body and spirit? If this is the change you are longing for, aromatherapy may be perfect for you.

Although the use of aromatic plants and their essential oils to heal mind, body, and spirit can be traced back to ancient civilizations all over the world, modern aromatherapy as we know it has only been around for a few hundred years. In fact, it was a renewed interest in natural, plant-based healing that brought essential oils into the modern world. This was due in part to a French chemist, Ren Gattfoss, who realized their great healing potential when he plunged his arm into a vat of lavender essential oil after sustaining serious burns during a lab explosion. That famous lab explosion of the 1920's led him on a quest to further research essential oils and unravel their full potential.

Today, aromatherapy is a healing art that uses essential oils in combination with other natural ingredients to assist individuals in various forms of holistic health needs. These needs may include chronic and acute pain relief, grief and loss, stress relief, immune system support, or even adjusting to needed medications. Although there are many products on the market labeled “aromatherapy,” true aromatherapy involves the dynamic relationship between the individual seeking treatment, the aromatherapist and the essential oils. Because essential oils are chemically complex, energetic and spiritual in nature, an effective way of using essential oils is through customized blending.

The holistic framework that encompasses aromatherapy involves more than just choosing the right essential oil to treat a symptom. The complexity of each individual essential oil calls for the aromatherapists' expertise in knowing the many different qualities each essential oil possesses. The skill of the aromatherapist involves selecting the right combination of essential oils to help the individual gain physiological, emotional, mental, and spiritual balance.

Although aromatherapy may sound serious and complex, it is also a nurturing and soothing form of self-care. There is nothing like a cream, massage oil or even a body scrub custom made just for you that not only provides overall relief and balance, but also makes you feel that you are worth the time and effort.
