Alzheimer’s Awareness Month: Supporting Brain Health with Lymphatic Massage

November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, a time to focus on brain health and ways to reduce the risk of cognitive decline.  One often overlooked approach to supporting brain function is through lymphatic massage, with additional focus in the head and neck area. The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in removing waste and toxins from the body, including the brain, and improving its function can have benefits for mental clarity and overall brain health.

Performing gentle lymphatic massage around the head and neck helps stimulate lymph flow, encouraging the removal of metabolic waste and reducing inflammation in brain tissues. This is especially beneficial in addressing the glymphatic system, the brain’s unique waste removal system. By improving lymph flow in these areas, we support the brain’s ability to clear out the toxins that can amplify symptoms of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative conditions.

In addition to lymphatic massage, it’s important to understand the gut-brain connection. The gut is often referred to as the “second brain” due to its influence on mood, cognition, and overall brain function. Gut health is deeply linked to the lymphatic system, with about 1/3 of the body’s lymphatics located in the abdomen. A healthy gut supports the lymphatic system’s ability to process and remove toxins, reducing inflammation and promoting better brain health .

Poor gut health can impair lymphatic function, leading to a buildup of toxins that can affect both the gut and brain. Supporting gut health with a nutrient-rich diet, hydration, and exercise can enhance lymphatic flow, promoting clearer thinking and reducing the risk of cognitive decline.

This Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, consider adding lymphatic massage and gut health practices to your wellness routine to support brain function and long-term cognitive health.
