What You Need to Know About “Barbie Botox”

The 2023 Barbie movie has captivated film lovers around the world. While much has been said about the artfully curated soundtrack and the surprisingly sophisticated plotline, the movie’s breakaway success is largely down to Australian actress Margot Robbie’s uncanny performance as Barbie.

Robbie is every bit the blonde bombshell, with sparkling blue eyes and perfectly white teeth. However, it’s her elegant, swan-like neck that really has the Internet talking. Even two months after the movie’s initial U.S. release, the hashtag “Barbie Botox” is still trending on TikTok, boasting over seven million views.

What Exactly is Barbie Botox?

So, what is “Barbie Botox” and why is it so popular? Barbie Botox, also sometimes known as “traptox,” refers to a cosmetic procedure in which around 40 units of Botox are injected into the muscles in the neck and back. Once injected into the trapezius muscles, the Botulinum toxin atrophies the area and lowers the shoulders, creating the illusion of an elongated neck. The effects start to show approximately three weeks after the first round of treatment and can last up to 4-6 months.

Trapezius Botox, while now known primarily for its cosmetic application, began as a way to treat upper back and shoulder pain. By relaxing the taut muscles in the neck and shoulder region, individuals with chronic pain can experience relief without cortisol shots or such frequent trips to the physio.

It’s important to note that although Margot Robbie’s slender neck sparked the public interest in the cosmetic application of Barbie Botox, the Aussie starlet has reportedly not had this exact procedure done herself. Instead, the name is thought to have been coined by TikTok influencer Isabelle Lux, who posted a video in June 2023 revealing her results from trapezius Botox while standing in front of a “Barbie” movie poster. The TikToker’s remarkable transformation sent her fans running to book in the procedure themselves.

What to Do If You Want Barbie Botox

If you’re interested in Barbie Botox, the first step is to make an appointment with an experienced cosmetics injector. A qualified clinician who has taken Botox training and certification courses, such as this one in Nashville, will expertly talk you through the risks and the benefits of the procedure and help you identify whether it’s the best treatment option for your cosmetic goals.

The most suitable candidates for Barbie Botox are usually women in their mid-20s to early 30s looking to reduce the appearance of strong, developed muscles in the traps area. These muscles can develop from excessive weightlifting, poor posture or even just genetics. Though not detrimental to their health, some women find that developed trapezius muscles can give the appearance of a shorter, more masculine neckline. Treatment may be appropriate where this leads to reduced self-esteem, with many women citing their reason for trying “traptox” as a desire to wear off the shoulder summer or wedding dresses with more confidence.

Barbie Botox, however, is not suitable for everyone. The treatment is not recommended for individuals under 21 years of age or anyone with already weakened trapezius muscles. Treating a candidate with naturally weak trapezius muscles can result in a less dramatic result and may also lead to complications, such as excessive neck weakness and swallowing difficulties. Though extremely rare, the proximity of the trapezius muscles to the respiratory and central nerve centers can also lead to breathing complications.

Overall, Barbie Botox has truly earned its considerable popularity. When administered by a trained professional, it is a low-risk and minimally invasive way to achieve an elegant, regal, and feminine neckline without resorting to more drastic cosmetic surgery.
