Maintaining Beautiful, Healthy Hair

Hair care specialists focus not only on great styles but hair care. The process of maintaining beautiful, healthy looking hair is one that takes many steps. The first step is to make sure the hair is detangled. Our hair sheds 80-100 strands a day so if you are coming out of twists or braids your hair has not shed and those strands need to be removed prior to saturating the hair with water. During the detangling process you can use a water bottle and mist with water, use a detangling spray or some people also use conditioner to detangle.

The next step is the shampoo and conditioner process. Knowing what kind of shampoo to use for your hair is major. If you have color you need a color moisture shampoo. If you have dry, itchy scalp, you will need a therapeutic shampoo, and if you are getting an iron out start with a clarifying shampoo. Professional natural hair stylists always include a moisture shampoo for every client.

Conditioning is also key based upon what the client’s hair needs are. After conditioner is applied we comb in sections and twist it, then we rinse each section thoroughly with luke warm to cool water then they are placed under a dryer to pre-dry. This helps in absorbing excess water and to cut down on using excess heat from the blow dryer. Once that is done we blow dry the hair and oil the scalp and the hair and follow-up with a scalp massage.

This process is typical for natural hair but can vary based on styling preferred. At the end of the day making sure that the hair is cared for before, during and after styling is key to maintaining healthy looking hair.

Finding a stylist who cares about your hair and offers hair care on a biweekly basis will ensure growth for your hair.
