Lip Augmentation

Lip augmentation with fillers has become one of the most requested treatments in the cosmetic industry. Although it has become widely popular, there are common myths associated with lip filler injections.

One of the most common myths is that lip filler will look unnatural, giving the patient a “ducky” appearance.  Another myth is that lip filler is strictly for young patients.

Lip filler injections are done for patients of all ages. The types of fillers that are used are hyaluronic acid based. Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in almost every single cell in the body. So, it is an extremely safe product to use and is FDA approved for cosmetic injections of the face, including the lips.

There are several types of hyaluronic acid-based fillers. The type of filler chosen depends on the amount of volume desired. Examples of fillers include: Volbella, Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Restylane Classic, and more. The type of filler used should be determined after a consultation with your doctor. On average, these fillers can last 6-12 months.

Lip augmentation should be customized to the patient’s face to prevent having an unnatural or drastic change to the face.

Lip fillers should simply enhance a patient’s natural lip and with correct placement, the filler should look and feel as if the filler isn’t even present. Patients often report that after lip augmentation, they feel more confident and sometimes find themselves trying out newer and bolder lip colors.

For patients seeking a more permanent lip augmentation, lip implants can be a treatment option. Lip implants are made from soft silicone and are tapered at the edges to match the natural shape of the lips. The implants cannot leak or rupture and come in a variety of sizes, depending on the amount of lip augmentation desired. These implants look and feel natural.

Lip fillers can also be used to lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth. In these patients, the cutaneous portion (the skin above and below the lip) of the lip is injected to rejuvenate the perioral region.

Finally, when choosing a provider for lip augmentation, it is important that they are experienced and trained.

A poor lip augmentation can look and feel unnatural, so make sure you do a little research and inquire about the training and experience of the provider who will be doing your injections.
