Facts About Men and Cosmetic Surgical Procedures

An annual study by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) reveals that since 2000 there has been a 60% increase in men electing to have cosmetic procedures and specifically a 91% increase among men having non-surgical facial procedures and treatments. Many men are more concerned about and aware of their appearance as they move into and past their 40's.

What Are Some Of the Most

Common Cosmetic Procedures That Men Request?

In 2008 the top cosmetic surgical procedures for men according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery were liposuction, rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). The list of top nonsurgical procedures included Botox, microdermabrasion and facial fillers (Restylane, Radiesse). Deep furrows or folds between the eyebrows and on the forehead often make you look angry , and droopy brows or upper eyelids can make you appear tired. If you are in the public eye or constantly interacting with others all day, your appearance may often give a false perception of who you are and how you feel.

If I Am Not Ready For

Surgical Procedures But Just Want To Look More Youthful

and Less Tired What Can I Do?

Many men who don't routinely practice a skin care regimen or protect their skin are left with the early signs of aging, effects of sun damage, acne scarring or dehydration. First start with a simple physician-prescribed skin care regimen that addresses your individual needs, nourishes and protects your skin. Next, your diet, including water intake, fruits, vegetables and important sources of vitamins/antioxidants, can also serve as an important way to improve and maintain your skin.

Botox/Dysport are popular non-surgical injections that block nerve impulses and temporarily weaken the muscles that cause deep folds in the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes (crows feet). These folds may make some men look angry or tired. These injections help to flatten out the areas and their effects last from 3-4 months.

Facial fillers such as Restylane and Radiesse are also injectables but help to fill in and increase the volume in the folds around the cheeks and mouth. They provide immediate results may last up to 18 months.

Microdermabrasion is a special treatment that is ideal for men desiring healthy looking skin and to reduce fine lines. The technique uses a device like a fine sandblaster that helps to loosen and vacuum away dead skin cells. These are great for controlling acne, hyperpigmentation, superficial acne scars and sun damaged skin. The treatments last from 30-45 minutes with no down time and work well with home care regimens.
